The parish church of St. Maximilian Kolbe is a Roman Catholic church building in Nuremberg - Langwasser . It is subordinate to the patronage of the Roman Catholic priest and concentration camp prisoner Maximilian Kolbe , who was canonized in 1982 . The church is part of the only ecumenical center of the diocese of Eichstätt , the so-called church center Langwasser . The municipality covers the area Langwasser-Nordost.

history

The building was built in 1985/86 according to plans by Eberhard Schunck and Dieter Ullrich. The building was consecrated as part of the opening of the church center on December 7, 1986 by Bishop Karl Braun (Roman Catholic) and District Dean Hermann von Loewenich (Evangelical Lutheran) . The church of St. Maximilian Kolbe and the premises of the Catholic community center and the kindergarten encompass the western part of the Ecumenical Center.

architecture

Exterior and structure

In keeping with modern architecture , St. Maximilian Kolbe, like the entire Ecumenical Center, is subject to a uniform, linear basic structure, on the basis of which church life can develop. The outer walls made of warm, gray concrete module stones and the roofing made of titanium zinc do not stand out from the other structures of the church center. The similar coloring of the facade and roof also creates a homogeneous appearance. Apart from the barred sacristy windows , the main portal on the south side and the two glass skylights in the entrance area and above the chancel , the exterior is largely unstructured. Is located at the southeast corner of shared by Catholic and Protestant community Tower , one of steel beams constructed Campanile . The southern porch, which contains the portal , vestibule and sacristy, forms a separate structure and, in addition to the parish church, also opens up the parish hall to the west.

inner space

In the interior, too, the warm gray concrete module block is the central design element. The walls are divided vertically by massive pillars. A much more restrained horizontal structure is created by the cross bars drawn in at a height of 2.40 meters. The area below is divided by oak trellises that correspond to the oak floor. The chancel is characterized as a kind of apse by the outwardly curved surrounding walls . The rear wall of the apse is illuminated by a skylight the width of the entire front of the altar, the immediate area of the altar receives a deep light from the second skylight on the south side of the building, which makes it stand out as a place for liturgical events.

Furnishing

The parish church of St. Maximilian Kolbe has a simple, modern interior . Opposite the filigree ambo and the simple, wooden sediles , the massive, curved stone altar dominates the chancel. Above this there is a simple wooden cross in the light cone of the skylight; on the back wall of the sanctuary is a metal stele containing the tabernacle .

organ

The organ of the parish church of St. Maximilian Kolbe was built in 1996 by Thomas Jann from Allkofen near Laberweinting in Lower Bavaria . The instrument on the ground floor to the right of the altar with purely mechanical performance and stop actions comprises 20 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The II. Manual is swellable .
