history

Griesbach Castle, first mentioned in 1075 , had a castle chapel dedicated to St. Michael was consecrated. The current brick building was built around 1480 in the late Gothic style. This castle church of St. Michael was initially an aristocratic own church and later a branch church of the Karpfham parish, which was subordinate to the Passau cathedral chapter . In 1511 it became a benefice and temporarily exposed cooperative, from 1616 (or 1634) parish vicariate , and when an independent parish was established in Griesbach on July 10, 1805, it became a parish church.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Griesbach had grown to almost 1,300 people, so that the church became too small. In 1911 the construction of the new parish church "Holy Family" began. Since its consecration on July 2, 1913, St. Michael's Church has been used as a cemetery church, where the requiem is usually celebrated at burials .
