location

The church building is located in the middle of Einruhr in the Rur Valley on the corner of Rurstrasse and Franz-Becker-Strasse.

General

Originally, Einruhr belonged to the parish of Olef and in 1660 came to the newly established parish of Wollseifen, which was separated from Olef . At that time there was no church of its own in Einruhr. It was not until 1749 that the residents built a chapel in which services could also be celebrated on Sundays. Since then, Einruhr also had his own vicar , who was subordinate to the pastor of Wollseifen.

During the French era , the Archdiocese of Cologne , to which Wollseifen and thus Einruhr belonged, was dissolved and in 1802 added to the Diocese of Liège . In 1818 Einruhr came to the first diocese of Aachen , which was dissolved again in 1825. Since then, Einruhr has belonged again to the Archdiocese of Cologne. Despite the frequent changes in the responsible dioceses, the status of Einruhr as a branch community of Wollseifen had not changed.

In the 1860s, the pastor Quirinus Hilgers from Wollseifen tried to raise the Einruhr branch to the parish. These efforts were successful, so that Einruhr was finally separated from Wollseifen on May 20, 1864 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Johannes von Geissel, and raised to an independent parish . In 1930 the parish was added to the newly founded diocese of Aachen, to which it still belongs today. On October 1, 1956, the parish was expanded to include the Erkensruhr branch. This previously belonged to the parish Dedenborn . Already in 1952 the Dedenborn pastor Joseph Engels tried to re-parish Erkensruhr.

Building history

The first church was built in 1749 by Einruhr by the inhabitants of the place and by the pastor Wollseifener Hilger Mouse 1751 benediziert . The branch church was a single-nave hall building made of quarry stone . In 1864 the branch church was elevated to parish church in the course of the parish elevation. At the end of the 19th century, the parish church became too small and a larger new building was decided on elsewhere. The old church was preserved, but was destroyed in the last months of the war in 1945.

In the two years 1909 and 1910, today's parish church was built in neo-Gothic style according to plans by the Cologne architect Heinrich Forthmann . The solemn consecration took place on August 2, 1911.

The church was badly damaged during World War II . The vault of the nave and the three-sided closed choir were completely destroyed, so that only the bell tower and the walls of the nave were preserved. The reconstruction was carried out according to plans by Lambert Oligschläger from Aachen . Oligschläger left the preserved outer walls and the bell tower, which changed the external appearance of the church only slightly. The consecration of the rebuilt church took place on June 25, 1950.

In 1980 the sacristy was expanded according to plans by Leo Weber from Kesternich and between 1985 and 1986 the entire church building was renovated.

Building description

St. Nikolaus is a single-nave, four-bay hall church in the neo-Gothic style . The bell tower is four-story and built in front of the nave in the west. In the east, a rectangular, windowless choir in modern shapes adjoins the nave . Before the destruction there was a choir closed on three sides.

Despite the war damage, the exterior has retained its neo-Gothic appearance. The interior, on the other hand, is modern and no longer shows any elements of neo-Gothic style. The windows are rectangular (from the outside they are still ogival) and the entire interior is spanned by a flat wooden ceiling. The faithful are offered 96 seats and 200 standing places.

Furnishing

In the interior there is a modern and simple equipment. Worth mentioning is a cross with a crucifix from the 18th century. It was located in the Wollseifen parish church of St. Rochus until around 1946 . The Way of the Cross also comes from the Wollseifen church . The oldest piece of equipment is a figure from the 15th century. It shows Mary with the baby Jesus. The stained glass windows in the tower are works by Erich Charlier from 1990 and the windows in the nave were created by Maria Katzgrau in 1958.
