St. Oswald Church, Stockach

St. Oswald is the name of a Roman Catholic church in Stockach , a town in the district of Konstanz in the state of Baden-Württemberg . It is named after Oswald , King of Northumbria, who is venerated as a saint .

history

St. Oswald 1925, painting by Gustav Rockholtz

The patronage of St. Oswald, who was especially venerated in the Middle Ages, suggests that the first previous church of the current church was built in the Middle Ages. The cornerstone of the Gothic church , consecrated in 1402, is still in the side wall of the baptistery. A major fire in the course of the War of the Spanish Succession destroyed the entire city and with it its church in 1704.

Between 1707 and 1728 the church was rebuilt in stages in the Baroque style. The tower with its onion dome was completed in 1733. Already at the end of the 19th century the building was perceived as too small and shabby, but an extension or new building that was envisaged could initially not be realized due to the First World War and the inflation of 1922/23 .

In 1932 the old church was torn down to make way for a new building. The tower of the baroque church was preserved at the request of the population. The building was erected within a year based on a design by Otto Linder and was completed on October 15, 1933 by the Freiburg Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Consecrated to Wilhelm Burger .

After the Second Vatican Council , the church was thoroughly renovated in 1971/1972 and adapted to the more recent liturgical developments. The church was renovated again in the late 1990s.

description

Building design

The nave facing northwest has a U-shape that tapers slightly towards the curve. It is surrounded by a low arcade with small round windows. The south-eastern entrance facade is flanked by two tower stumps, which are barely higher than the nave and covered with a very flat pyramid roof. Between them there is a vestibule, which can be entered through two arches and from which two portals lead into the interior. The actual facade is set back and contains a round window in the middle, above which a plain but very large cross is attached. The semicircular baptistery is attached to the left tower stump , next to the right tower stump is the Oswald chapel . In the southeast of the church building, the tower with a baroque onion dome, which has remained standing from the previous church, is connected to the nave. Characteristic of this building are the very narrow and high arched windows, which are arranged in groups of two on the long sides, in groups of three on the towers and connected individually and in the chapels in larger groups.

St. Oswald, interior view

Under the front part of the church, the chancel, there is a lower church for services in a smaller frame. On the square in front of the church is the Stockach monument to the fallen .

Interior

Baptistery

The two entrance portals are located under the gallery , which is supported by five arches. The entire church space is a unit, that is, the chancel is not separated from the space of the community like the classic choir . But the space is concentrated on the altar, which is, however, slightly raised, which is caused by the slight parabolic shape and, above all, by the strongly structured design of the ceiling, which corresponds to the parabolic shape of the room. The room is accompanied on both sides by low arcades with round windows. The room is well lit by the already mentioned double-arched windows in restrained colors, which the painter Horst J. Beck designed during the renovation in 1971/1972. The baptistery and the Oswald chapel are located at the rear of the church.

Furnishing

In the curve behind the altar, which has been brought closer to the faithful after the conciliar liturgical reform, there is a crucifixion group by the sculptor Emil Sutor instead of an altarpiece . In the Oswald Chapel there is a statue from the middle of the 18th century, which shows the saint as a prince with a large cross in his hand. In the vestibule of the baptistery there is a late Gothic relief from the previous church that shows the adoration of the three wise men. Saint Cecilia , the patroness of church music, is shown in the round window above the gallery in the area of the organ .
