St. Pankratius in Schluchtern , a district of Leingarten in the Heilbronn district , is a church of the Catholic parish of St. Pankratius / St. Lioba Leingarten . A previous building of thischoir tower church ,builtin the Gothic period, was first mentioned in a document in 1305. Because of the changeful religious policy of the Electoral Palatinate , she served three denominations at times.

history

In 1305, a church is documented for the first time in Schluchtern. Reinbot von Neipperg waived his rights to the church and the church law towards Count Eberhard von Württemberg . The lords of Neipperg had built or acquired the church in the 13th century, apparently still with the rights of a private church lord . The church stood on a "mountain", safely on the site of today's Pankratius Church, which was first named in the Worms synod of 1496, as a branch church of the parish church in Großgartach. Together with graves they stood in the fortified churchyard. The parish was looked after by a folk priest and by a chaplain for the early mass at the Altar of Our Lady. In 1496 the Neipperg again had the right of patronage for both positions ; the building load lay with the municipality. After the introduction of the Lutheran Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate, after 1556, only Evangelical Lutheran services were allowed in the Pankratius Church. But already from 1559 the house of God served exclusively the Evangelical Reformed . During the Thirty Years War , many documents and the three bells of the church were lost.

After 1685 the elector demanded the mutual tolerance of the denominations. 45 Reformed, 62 Lutherans and 12 Catholics lived in Schluchtern at that time. After the introduction of the Simultaneum in 1698, the three denominations could use the Pankratius Church together. In the Palatinate church division in 1705/07, the church fell to the Reformed. In 1744, 65 Reformed, 196 Lutherans and 84 Catholics lived in the village. In 1823 the Catholic community was able to acquire the Pankratius Church from the Reformed, but with almost no equipment. After the merger of the villages Schluchtern and Großgartach to form the new community of Leingarten in 1970, the two Catholic parishes merged on January 1, 1977 to form the entire community of St. Pankratius / St. Lioba Leingarten together.

Building history

To the east of the Pankratius Church is the vaulted choir from Gothic times on the ground floor of the choir tower , the oldest part of the church. The nave was the same width and was about 13 meters long. The Reformed Church expanded in 1760 by moving the north wall of the nave outwards; They walled up the pointed arch window in the east wall of the choir. In 1869/70 the church was renovated: the tower roof and the nave were re-covered and the interior was painted; the side altar - today's St. Mary 's altar - has been renovated and gilded. The middle part of this altar with the tabernacle was made in 1905 by a Schluchtern craftsman based on a drawing by a sculptor. In 1912/13 a fundamental renovation took place: the nave was extended to the west and south; the tower, covered by a pyramid roof , received its current characteristic onion roof; the sacristy was moved from the south to the east behind the choir. When the wall for the entrance was broken through, the Gothic window, which was bricked up in 1760, was discovered and frescoes from around 1500 were discovered in the reveal . Two female saints are shown, St. Odilia on one side and St. Barbara on the other. In 1913 the artistically remarkable frescoes were restored by a painter, the late Gothic window was re-glazed and moved to the south side of the chancel. In 1914/15 the Atelier for Church Art Allert in Schwetzingen made a new high altar using the parts of the old altar that were still usable. The Marien altar was adapted to the larger room. The Josef altar, the right side altar, had to be rebuilt in Schwetzingen.

During the renovation in 1926, the tower roof was refurbished. In 1930 the statues , the side altars, the high altar, the communion bench and the organ were renovated . The late Gothic statue was re- taken and placed on the altar Marie. The artistic painting work was done by the Karlsruhe art painting Gebr. Hemberger, who in 1931 also created the large ceiling painting with the saints Kosmas and Daminan in the baroque style . Further renovations followed in 1956/57 and 1970. With the renovation in 1976 there were drastic changes: pulpit , communion bench and confessional were removed; two side aisles replace the central aisle; the staircase to the gallery was replaced by a spiral staircase and the gallery parapet was changed. This lost the baroque character of the church. The renovations that followed were mainly substance-preserving measures. In 1994 a community room was added to the northwest of the church.

Furnishing

Due to the change of ownership and the numerous renovations, little of the historical furnishings in the Pankratius Church has been preserved. An old crucifix that today stands on the altar in Schluchtern's Evangelical Martin Luther Church and a historic bell that was in the church remained in the possession of the evangelical community when the church was sold in 1823.

The late Gothic window in the choir and the two frescoes in the door jamb of the entrance to the sacristy as well as a late Gothic, carved and colored Madonna figure are worth mentioning . The baptismal font dates from 1700. A memorial plaque from 1823 commemorates the return of the Catholics to the church. Since 1958 a donated baroque statue of the church patron Saint Pankratius has adorned the high altar. Outside the church there is a stone crucifix from the 18th century.
