The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Mittenwald in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen belongs as part of the parish of the same name to the Werdenfels deanery of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . The church at Matthias-Klotz-Straße 2 is a listed building and with its richly painted church tower is a landmark of Mittenwald.

history

St. Peter and Paul, 1938

A Mittenwald church is first mentioned in 1315. The current church was built between 1738 and 1740 by the master builder Joseph Schmuzer . The tower is marked with the year 1746. Consecrated the church on 23 June 1749 by was Auxiliary Bishop Johann Ferdinand Freiherr von Bödigheim .

In 1999 Bernhardt Edskes installed a new organ .

Description and equipment

The late Baroque hall church has a retracted late Gothic choir . The church tower is connected to the south .

The numerous frescoes are by Matthäus Günther from Augsburg . In the choir they show the vocation of Peter as head of the church, next to it in side panels on the right “They will not overcome the gate of hell” and on the left Jesus wandering on the Sea of ​​Galilee . On the belt arch is the coat of arms of the bishops of Freising , between the arch and the main painting a representation of the conversion of St. Paul on the way to Damascus. The church patrons Peter and Paul are depicted on the church tower .

In the 20th century the organ was rebuilt three times in St. Peter and Paul. First built in 1905 by Josef Mühlbauer III. from Augsburg an instrument with cone chest , pneumatic performance and stop action mechanism and 13 stops on two manuals and pedal . The disposition was:
