The Catholic branch church of St. Peter and Paul in Holzkirchen , a district of the municipality of Alling in the Upper Bavarian district of Fürstenfeldbruck , is a late Gothic country church that was built around 1520. The church is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul . It is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The first written mention of the place as "wooden churches" can be found in 1184/86 in the traditions of the Schäftlarn monastery . In 1515, a church with a cemetery is mentioned for the first time as a branch of the parish Unterpfaffenhofen . Remnants of this original church building from the Romanesque period are still preserved in the north wall of the nave . Today's church was built around 1520 by the local master builders Jörg Schöttl the Elder and Jörg Schöttl the Younger. In the 18th century, the interior was redesigned in Baroque style and a flat ceiling was installed in the nave.

architecture

Exterior construction

Until the renovation in 1979/80, the church was an exposed brick building, on which the cuboids of the Romanesque predecessor church could still be recognized. The towering on the north side of the church bell tower is still with its original gable roof covered. In 1719 the sacristy was added to the tower. The former southern entrance hall was converted into a chapel and has served as a war memorial chapel since 1952. Today's access is through a porch that was added to the west of the church in the 19th century.

The interior is a hall with a slightly retracted choir . On the upper floor of the sacristy is the oratory of the Lords of the Court , the original furnishings of which have been preserved. The ground floor of the tower is covered by a star vault, the choir has a net vault with keystones on which the two church patrons Peter and Paul and St. Sebastian , who was venerated as the plague saint , are depicted. The capitals of the circular services, on which the ribs of the vault rest, are decorated with coats of arms and the craftsmen's marks of the two master builders, Jörg Schöttl the Elder and Jörg Schöttl the Younger.

Leaded glass window

Leaded glass window

A leaded glass window from around 1522/24 has been preserved in the southern choir wall . It depicts Christ resting , next to it the founder of the window, the Unterpfaffenhofen pastor Ulrich Marschalck, and other people. In the arch above the inscription can be read: "ulricus marschalck plebanus xste mihi optata sis pro me o requies". Only the fragments “plebanus” and “marschalck” remain from another inscription. Presumably the panes were used the wrong way round during the renovation in 1979/80. The inscriptions on the four circular discs below, which are provided with the craftsmen's marks of the Holzkirchen master builder family Schöttl, read: "maister hanns schötl czu holczkirchen elspet sein housewife" (bottom left), "master jörg schötl maurer czu holczkirchen affra sein housewife" (bottom right) , "Jörg schötl the young 1524" (top left), "affra jörg schötl housewife 1524" (top right). In the middle of the lower left disc, on which a flower is depicted next to a craftsman's mark, is the year 1522. The upper right disc is only decorated with a flower.

Gallery pictures
  • The two carved figures of the apostles Peter and Paul on the side walls in the choir are from the former baroque high altar from 1687/88. The hands and attributes of the saints are no longer preserved.
  • The four-column high altar built in the form of a Roman triumphal arch from around 1801/02 stands at the transition from Rococo to early Classicism . It was designed and executed by the sculptor Franz Jakob Schwanthaler , the father of Ludwig Schwanthaler , the creator of Bavaria . To the side are the life-size figures of the apostles Peter and Paul - in white frames , in the excerpt there is God the Father - also in white. The altarpiece from 1845 depicts Our Lady enthroned on clouds.
  • The two side altars are also based on designs by Franz Jakob Schwanthaler. The altar sheet of the northern altar with the depiction of St. Sebastian was created in 1872 by the Munich painter Georg Lacher in the style of the late Nazarene . The altar sheet of the southern altar was made in 1831 by Franz Xaver Kleiber and represents the instruction of Mary.
  • The choir stalls were made in the 17th century.
  • The figureless baroque pulpit dates from 1697.
  • The crucifix with the painful Mother of God hanging across from the pulpit from the first half of the 18th century was formerly worshiped as an image of grace .
  • The organ gallery has baroque paintings of the twelve apostles and Salvator mundi .
  • Memorial stones set into the wall for Maria Johanna von Huefnagl († 1745) and Franz Seraph von Schab († 1795) commemorate the former lords of the court marque and patron saint .
