The Roman Catholic branch church St. Rupertus in Gaden, a district of the municipality of Waging am See in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein , is essentially a Romanesque central building from the 12th century, which was rebuilt in the late Gothic style in the second half of the 15th century . Perhaps the Gnadenkapelle in Altötting served as a model for the building, which is unusual for the area . The church is consecrated to St. Rupert , the first bishop of Salzburg . It is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

During the renovation of the church from 1974 to 1977, a dedicatory inscription was discovered in the upper part of the east wall above the late Gothic vault, which suggests that the church was consecrated in 1171. In the fragmentary inscription, the Archbishop of Mainz , Konrad von Wittelsbach , who later became Archbishop of Salzburg , is named as consecrator . In the middle of the 15th century, the original flat ceiling of the Romanesque church building was replaced by a steep star vault decorated with tendril paintings and painted keystones . At this time or around 1635/36 the tower on the west facade was built, which was raised by the fifth floor in 1694. At the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century, the sacristy was added to the south of the choir . The tower hood with its multiple onions was put on around 1760/65. The sign , a portal porch open on three sides, was added at a later time. In the 19th century the church received a neo-Gothic interior .

The church is surrounded by a polygonal church courtyard wall, which includes the portal porch attached to the bell tower in the west. On both sides of the entrance, two famous bishops of the diocese of Salzburg are depicted in flat niches, on the left Saint Virgil with his attribute , a double-towered cathedral, and on the right Saint Rupert with a salt barrel at his feet.

The tower, structured by stone cornices , is covered by an onion dome that is divided into several sections. The bell storey is reinforced by strong corner pilasters and is pierced by large, arched sound arcades with pre-blinded balustrades .

An almost square choir adjoins the small, heptagonal central building in the east . One of the Romanesque round windows can still be seen on the east side of the choir. The choir and central room are covered by a star vault. In the central area, the eight-pointed star vault rests on polygonal services with profiled capitals .
