Stephanuskirche Halle (2009)

The St. Stephanus Church is a former Protestant church in Halle (Saale) .

history

The church originally belonged to the parish of the Laurentiuskirche . With the rapid population growth of the city of Halle during industrialization , the construction of a second church building became necessary. The decision was made in October 1882. The foundation stone for the building of the church could only be laid on June 28, 1891, and the inauguration took place on December 7, 1893. The church was built according to plans by the architect and Prussian construction officer Otto Kilburger , who had already designed the church in Nietleben .

The church was used by the community until the second half of the 20th century, and in 1967 it was deedicated . The building was used by Halle University as a book store from 1968. During repair work in March 2000, the spire caught fire and fell on the roof of the nave. The damage has now been removed. Its use as a magazine for the University and State Library in Halle ended in 2014. Today the church is empty.
