The side paddle steamer Stadt Dresden was built in 1837 by the mechanical engineering company Übigau and was mainly used on the Dresden – Hamburg route .

City of Dresden (1837/1838)

The ship was built from wood in 1837 on a meadow in Übigau near Dresden . The designer was the ship engineer Ernst Möhring. In the autumn of 1837 the transfer to Berlin to the machine factory of the manufacturer Franz Anton Egells took place . Here the installation of the steam boiler and the steam engine took place. The final expansion took place in Magdeburg in the shipyard of the Magdeburger Dampfschiffahrts-Compagnie located at the Packhof . On August 17th the ship arrived in Dresden. After installing a convertible top, the ship started sailing in the autumn of 1838. It was primarily intended to be used as a cargo and tug ship. On its first trip on October 30, 1838, the city of Dresden was supposed to bring emigrating Pietists to Hamburg. The low water level of the Elbe prevented the trip.

The period from 1839 to 1844

From March 1839 the ship was used in shuttle service between Riesa and Dresden until the Leipzig – Dresden railway line was completed on April 7, 1839. The ship reached a speed of 4.2 knots upstream and 9.5 knots downstream on this route . In 1841, the company decided to sell the ship, which was unsuitable for the upper Elbe due to its great draft. The alternative of installing a lighter steam engine as in the ships Queen Maria and Prince Albert was rejected for reasons of cost. Since the ship was still operated by the company in 1845, one must assume that the sale did not take place until 1845/46.

There are different details for the new owner. So it is said to have gone to the Hamburg company Schaar & Clauss for 11,000 thalers . According to another account, the United Hamburg-Magdeburg Steamship Compagnie bought the ship. In relation to the new price of the ship, the loss on sale was 20,000 thalers.

The steam engine

The steam engine was a two-cylinder, low-pressure side-balancing steam engine from Franz Anton J. Egells Berlin. The power of the machine was 197 hp. Due to the heavy weight of this machine, the draft of the ship was 1.02 m.
