The paddle steamer Pirna was built in the Blasewitz shipyard in 1898 . The ship was under the name of King Albert with the hull number 42 to set keel . The ship was named after Albert von Sachsen , the Saxon king. It was the second ship with that name. In 1919 it was named Pirna as the second ship . It has been part of the Saxon Steamship Company since 1992 and operates on the Upper Elbe . His berths are the moorings on the Terrassenufer in Dresden .

The time after commissioning until 1945

After being launched on April 27, 1898, the ship was put into service on May 22, 1898 as an upper deck steamer and drove for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDG). After the cessation of business operations, the ship sailed for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDA), which was newly founded in 1923 . The white painting of the ships, which was customary from 1926, earned it the name White Fleet . The ship was already equipped with a steam steering engine. It was built by the Übigau shipyard of the Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, chain, with factory no. 208 K.

In 1913 the ship received an electrical system. On May 25, 1919, like all ships bearing the name of a monarch or a monarchy, it was renamed and given the name Pirna .

In the winter of 1927/28 the ship was painted white. In the winter of 1928/29, the wheel arches were removed to make space for the installation of toilets and a steam heater was installed. The wooden shovels on the two paddle wheels were replaced by steel shovels.

In the summer of 1943 the Pirna, like all steamers, was given a camouflage finish. During the Second World War , the ship was rented by the German Reich without a crew and was an office ship in Dessau .

The time after 1945

In August 1946 the ship got under way again. The SBDA was transferred to public ownership on February 1, 1947 and was given the name VEB Elbeschiffahrt Sachsen . From 1950 to 1957 it belonged to the VEB Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagszentrale (DSU). After its dissolution, the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt und Reparaturwerft Dresden was established in 1957 and from 1967 the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt Dresden .

In 1960/61 the front deck saloon of the ship was built. In 1962/63 the electrical installation was renewed and the boiler house was rebuilt. On October 7, 1972, there was a fire in the coal bunker and the fire spread to the engine room and the electrical system. After the repair, the ship came back into service in 1973. In 1974/75 the old boiler was replaced by the steam boiler from the tractor Mischa (Unscha), which was scrapped in 1974 . From 1986 to 1988 the ship was not in service due to a lack of personnel. After the resumption of service in 1989, the ship had to be taken out of service in 1990 due to a boiler damage. It was in the port of Dresden-Neustadt launched . In 1991 the ship was placed under monument protection.

On June 22, 1993 the shipyard was called in Laubegast. On July 19, 1993, the ship was taken ashore for reconstruction. In order to restore the historical state, the front deck saloon was removed. The hull was widened by 0.30 m and a new boiler was installed. The ship was put into service on May 1, 1994 for the steamship parade. In 1995 a steam dome was installed. Since the ship was mainly used on the “Bohemian Switzerland” route, a duty-free sales kiosk was built on board. After the Czech Republic joined the Schengen Agreement on December 21, 2007, the journeys were stopped.

In 1998 it celebrated its 100th anniversary of service as the twelfth ship in the fleet.

In 2005 the crankshaft had to be replaced, and the crankshaft of the young pioneers , who were broken up in 2001, was installed .

The steam engine

The steam engine is an oscillating high-pressure two-cylinder compound steam engine with injection condensation. Like the two-flame tube cylinder boiler, it was built by the Übigau shipyard of the Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, Ketten, with factory no. 204. The steam boiler installed in 1994 has a steam pressure of 10 bar , built by VEB Dampfkesselbau Übigau . In contrast to the first boiler, this one does not have two, but only one flame tube. Automatic oil firing has existed since 1994 .
