The paddle steamer Junge Pionier was built in 1898 as the last ship in the Blasewitz shipyard. The ship was under the name Karlsbad with the hull number 43 placed on Kiel . Since Karlsbad is a Czech town, it was renamed in 1946 and the third ship was named Sachsen and in 1951 the name Junge Pionier . The ship was scrapped in 2001.

The time after commissioning until 1945

After commissioning as an upper deck steamer in 1898, the ship sailed for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDG) until 1923 . After the cessation of business operations, the ship sailed for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDA), which was newly founded in 1923 . The white painting of the ships, which was customary from 1926, earned it the name White Fleet .

The ship was already equipped with a steam steering engine. It was built by the Übigau shipyard of the Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, chain with factory no. 209. The blades of the paddle wheel were 10 cm wider than on the other ships. As a result, the ship, which was only equipped with 1st class seats, was very fast. In 1909 it received an electrical system.

In the winter of 1927/28, the wheel arches were removed to make room for the installation of toilets. In the course of this, the ship was also painted white.

On August 20, 1941, the Karlsbad collided with the paddle steam tug Sachsen of the Neue Deutsch-Böhmische Elbeschiffahrt AG (NDBE). In this accident, the left wheel arch of the Karlsbad was torn off. There were several seriously injured.

During the Second World War , the Karlsbad, like other ships in the company, were given a camouflage finish. It was then decommissioned until 1945.

The time after 1945

The SBDA was transferred to public ownership on February 1, 1947 and was given the name VEB Elbeschiffahrt Sachsen . From 1950 to 1957 it belonged to the VEB Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagszentrale (DSU). After its dissolution, the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt und Reparaturwerft Dresden was established in 1957 and from 1967 the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt Dresden .

In 1946 the ship was renamed Sachsen . It was the third ship with that name. In 1947 the ship and engine were overhauled. At the start of the 1951 season, the ship was renamed Junge Pionier on April 22nd . In 1960 the ship received new electrical lighting. In 1964 the boiler house was lengthened and the boiler and machine underwent major repairs. In 1967 the port wheel case and in 1970 the starboard wheel case had to be replaced. In 1970 the ship also received a new wheelhouse and a new upper deck. In 1976/77 the ship was again in the shipyard for boiler repairs. The old boiler was scrapped. It received the steam boiler of the steam tug Sura of VEB Binnenreederei Berlin, which was scrapped on February 4, 1977 in the shipyard in Aken .

At the end of the 1988 season, the ship was decommissioned and in the Neustadt port in Dresden launched . On October 16, 1995, it was towed from Meissen to the Laubegaster shipyard and laid ashore here. In 1998 the ship celebrated its 100th anniversary of service at the shipyard as the thirteenth ship. Since there was no need for the ship, it should be rebuilt and chartered out. However, these plans were not implemented.

After no buyer was found, the ship was to be towed to the local shipyard in Roßlau at the beginning of 2001 . However, due to the poor condition of the ship's hull, no approval was given. As a result, the Junge Pionier was scrapped in October 2001. The steam engine and the entire engine room were stored in the Roßlau shipyard. The paddle wheels and other reusable parts were also preserved and stored for possible reconstruction. The bow of the ship is in the shipping exhibition of the Dresden Transport Museum . In 2005 the ship's crankshaft was installed in the Pirna's engine.

The steam engine

The steam engine is an oscillating high-pressure two-cylinder compound steam engine with injection condensation. It was built by the Übigau shipyard of the Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, chain, with factory no. 205. The power was 145 PSi. Nothing is known about the steam boiler installed last .
