The paddle steamer Saxonia was built in the Blasewitz shipyard in 1862 . The ship was laid with the hull number 4 on the keel .

The time until 1919

After commissioning as a smooth deck steamer in June 1862, the ship sailed for the United Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company , which was converted into the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDG) in March 1867 . The ship was mainly used on the Dresden - Torgau route .

In order to avoid the access of the Kingdom of Prussia , the ship was relocated to Theresienstadt in May 1866 in the run-up to the Austro-Prussian War and only relocated to Dresden after the end of the war in August 1866.

In winter 1868/69, the ship received a new two-liner - Case Boiler .

On October 30, 1873, the corpse of King Johann, who died in Pillnitz on October 29, 1873, was transported to Dresden by ship.

In the winter of 1876/77 a new two-flame tube suitcase boiler had to be installed.

In the winter of 1904/05, the ship underwent a general overhaul.

In autumn 1918, due to difficult economic conditions after the end of the First World War , the ship was launched and sold on March 3, 1919 for 20,000 marks to the Otto Krietsch shipping company in Magdeburg .

The time after the sale

The ship was probably not used here. It was sold on to the A. & W. Wojan shipyard in Danzig in May 1920 . In the same year it was listed in the register of the Kaunas waterway district and used in the Klaipeda area. In 1921 it was moved to Kaunas. In 1923 it was sold to the Rotblatas Levenbergas based in Jurbarkas and used under the name Lietuva . After the Red Army marched in on July 5, 1940, all ships were nationalized. Shortly after the outbreak of the German-Soviet War , it was secured in June 1941 by the advancing German troops and in October 1941 it was placed in trust by the administration of the Reichskommissariat Ostland , the General Commissioner in Kaunas. On May 13, the ship was rented to the newly founded Memel-Binnenschiffahrts-GmbH, Kaunas (Nemuno Laivininkystes Bendrové SAA). On January 14, 1943, the ship had to go to the shipyard for a boiler repair. It was used again on March 15, 1943. After the occupation of Kaunas by the Red Army in July 1944, the ship was moved west. In October 1944 the ship was transferred to the Kriegsmarine, Dienststelle Danzig (KMD), and was used as a hospital ship in the Curonian Lagoon . In January 1945 the shipping company Wilhelm Skorloff took over the management of the ship. As a result, it was probably used under the name Labiau to evacuate the population of Königsberg . In February it was abandoned by the Lithuanian occupation in Pillau . But it was still going and was reported as a total loss in Lochstedt in April 1945. In the castle Lochstedt the stocks of the Konigsberg State Archives were outsourced.

The steam engine

The steam engine as well as the three-flame tube suitcase boiler come from Koenig Johann , built at the shipbuilding and mechanical engineering company Ruston & Co. in Prague. It was an oscillating low-pressure two-cylinder twin steam engine with an output of 130 hp. In the twenties, the steam engine was replaced by a new machine from the Union-Gießerei Lokomotivfabrik und Maschinenbauanstalt AG of unknown design. This steam engine had an output of 148 hp.
