history

The time after commissioning until 1945

Paddle steamer Bastei in Leitmeritz

After commissioning as a smooth deck steamer on May 2, 1896, the ship sailed for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDG). After the cessation of business operations, the ship sailed for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDA), which was newly founded in 1923 . The white painting of the ships, which was customary from 1926, earned it the name White Fleet .

In 1911/12 electrical lighting was installed. In the winter of 1926/27 the ship received a steam steering engine with 4 HP. It was built by Dresdner Maschinenfabrik und Schiffswerft Uebigau AG with factory no. 1799. In 1927/28 the ship received an upper deck during the first major renovation in the Schiffswert Laubegast . In addition, the wheel arches were removed to make room for the installation of toilets and the paddle wheels, which were previously provided with wooden shovels, were given steel shovels. A steam heating supplied from now on the showroom on the lower deck. Now the ship was also painted white.

On August 24, 1934, the ship hit a rock at low tide at Obervogelgesang and sank. It was lifted and put back into motion after repairs.

During the Second World War , the bastion was camouflaged like other ships in the company. It was then decommissioned until 1945.

The time after 1945

The SBDA was transferred to public ownership on February 1, 1947 and was given the name VEB Elbeschiffahrt Sachsen . From 1950 to 1957 it belonged to the VEB Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagszentrale (DSU). After its dissolution, the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt und Reparaturwerft Dresden was established in 1957 and from 1967 the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt Dresden .

The bastion was renamed the Kurort Rathen in 1956 . In 1957 the ship and the engine were overhauled. In 1962 a new electrical system was installed. The electricity is generated by two turbo generators from RAW Dresden , which are driven by a steam turbine from the Nacke company in Coswig . In 1967/68 the ship was almost completely dismantled. In addition to renewing the side walls and raising the windows, the steel upper deck was also renewed. In 1970/71, the new wheel arches were built. On October 26, 1974, the ship wrecked at the Elbe bridge in Meissen .

In 1983/84 the ship received a new wheelhouse and a new navigating bridge . There were also some changes in the boiler area in the engine room . In 1989 the boiler had to be taken out of service. The ship was parked in the port of Dresden-Neustadt .

The time with the Saxon steamship

Paddle steamer Kurort Rathen in Koenigstein

Like eight other still existing Dresden steamers, the paddle steamer Kurort Rathen was overhauled at the Laubegast shipyard after the fall of the Wall . This happened in the period from June 28, 1993 to March 30, 1994. a. the waterline widened by 0.3 m. Externally, the ship was adapted to the color condition at the time of commissioning. The typical color of the SBDG at the time was a sand-colored hull with green decorative lines, a red underwater hull and, in this case, a black chimney . The salons were set up in the style of the time.

In a new look and with a new boiler, the ship was handed over to Sächsische Dampfschiffahrts GmbH & Co. Conti Elbeschiffahrts KG on March 31, 1994 . In 1995 the steam boiler received a steam dome . In 1996 it became the ninth ship to celebrate its 100th anniversary. At the turn of the millennium, both cylinders of the steam engine received a new piston rod , and in 2001/02 the crankshaft received new crank pins .

The steam engine

Steam engine

The steam engine is an oscillating high-pressure two-cylinder compound steam engine with injection condensation. Like the two-flame tube cylinder boiler, it was built by the Übigau shipyard of the Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, Ketten, with the factory no. 113. The power is 145 hp. The steam boiler installed in 1994 has a steam pressure of 10 bar , built by the Übigau steam boiler construction company . In contrast to the first boiler, this one does not have two, but only one flame tube . Automatic oil firing has existed since 1994 .
