geography

The place is two kilometers north of Mescherin. The neighboring towns are Pargowo in the north, Żabnica in the north-east, Gryfino in the south-east, Mescherin in the south, Geesow in the south-west, Tantow in the west and Neurochlitz in the north-west.

history

Staffelde was first mentioned in a document in 1295. The place name is a name transfer from Staffelde in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel or from Staffelde in the Oberhavel district . After belonging to the Randow district since the 18th century, the place came after its dissolution in 1939 to the Greifenhagen district in the province of Pomerania , where it remained until 1945.

After the end of World War II in 1945, the demarcation line ran between the Soviet occupation zone in Germany and the areas under Polish administration ( Oder-Neisse border ) immediately west of Staffelde, which came under Polish administration and was renamed Staw . The German residents were expelled unless they had fled before. On June 11, 1951, the now uninhabited place with an area strip along the Oder of 76.5 hectares was transferred to the GDR in exchange for an assignment of territory on the island of Usedom in favor of Poland (so-called Swinemünder Sack with the Świnoujście waterworks ) and assigned to the district Angermünde repopulated. Staffelde is the only town that became German again after a temporary Polish administration between 1945 and 1951.
