action

After 28 years in prison, Val is picked up by his best friend Doc. Both decide to celebrate the discharge in the evening. When Val is freshening up at the sink, Doc draws a pistol, but immediately hides it again - unnoticed by Val. Val was a member of a gang of criminals who accidentally killed the son of gang boss Claphands in a shooting. Val took responsibility for death and did not betray anyone for 28 years. All but Doc of the old cronies broke off contact with him.

Doc calls Claphands and it becomes clear that his job is to kill Val. Claphands blackmailed Doc by threatening his life if Val isn't dead by 10:00 a.m. the next morning. After going to a brothel, a nightclub and some drug use, Val realizes that Doc is supposed to murder him. He accepts his fate and wants to visit his old friend Hirsch again. With a stolen car belonging to other criminals, they wander through the night and have some adventures with Hirsch. He then falls asleep peacefully and they bury him. Val gives a sentimental speech at the grave.

At dawn Doc and Val go to Doc's hangout where Val has his hangman's meal. Val Doc's affection for the pretty waitress Alex is noticed. Doc admits to Val that she is his granddaughter but that he never told her. Doc calls Claphands again and asks him to show mercy again. Doc then tells Doc that he will not only murder him but also Alex if Val does not die by 10 a.m. This threat causes Doc to reconsider the assignment to kill Val. He writes Alex a letter in which he reveals himself and bequeaths her his money, his apartment and his paintings. Then he and Val go to the warehouse where Claphands works and start shooting at him and his killers. The outcome remains uncertain, but the ending suggests that both will die fighting the gangsters in a duel. The last shot shows the sunset over the warehouse, which corresponds exactly to a painting by Doc.

The lexicon of international films judged: "Melancholic gangster film that relies more on the interaction of its furious old stars than on action and confronts them tragicomically with the end of their lives." Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle gave a very enthusiastic review and praised the performance by Pacino and Walken.

Director Fisher Stevens begins with a permissive screenplay by Noah Haidle that exists in no particular city, for no particular reason other than to give the actors the pleasure of riffing through more or less standard set-pieces.
