Hochzirl is a place in the municipality of Zirl in Tyrol .

geography

The Rotte Hochzirl is between 900 and 1000 m (train station 922  m above sea level ) and thus around 300 m above the valley floor of the Inn Valley below the Brunstkopf in the Karwendel . The place consists of the Hochzirl regional hospital, the Hochzirl train station and individual other buildings around the train station such as the former Kaiser Max inn . Hochzirl is connected to Innsbruck and Seefeld by the Mittenwaldbahn and accessed by a spur road from Zirl.

history

Bundesheilanstalt Hochzirl with the Vorberg Viaduct of the Mittenwaldbahn, 1959

In 1912 the Mittenwaldbahn from Innsbruck to Garmisch-Partenkirchen was opened. The crossing station above Zirl, about halfway between Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof and Seefeld , was called Hochzirl . In 1917, during the First World War , the War Welfare Office planned to build a military sanctuary for officers and crew on the Vorbergalpe above. The shell was taken over in 1921 by the Federal Employees' Health Insurance Institution (KVA) and opened in 1924 as a lung sanatorium based on the Davos model . In 1964 the system was acquired by the State of Tyrol and expanded in 1995.

railway station

Hochzirl reception building

The station, which opened in 1912, serves as a crossing station and is the stop of line 5 of the S-Bahn Tirol and REX trains in the direction of Innsbruck Hbf and Scharnitz or Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The two-storey reception building with a gable roof is, like other stations along the route, in the style of the homeland and has a balcony running around three sides. Its construction corresponds to the standard type for smaller stations of the kk state railways around 1900, as they were also built in the rest of Austria. The reception building and the goods store on the other side of the tracks are listed as historical monuments.

State hospital

State hospital

The hospital, planned as a military sanatorium and operated as a pulmonary sanatorium from 1924 to 1964, now has 200 beds and focuses on neurology and internal medicine .

Funicular

To connect the hospital with the lower-lying train station, a funicular with a 1000 mm gauge was built in 1925 , overcoming a height difference of 75 m over a length of 260 m with a constant incline of 30%. The drive took place in the mountain station with 110 V three-phase current and an output of 18.4 kW. Two cars, a passenger car for 10 passengers and a truck for a load of approx. 1000 kg, were used in shuttle operation. The line was renovated from 1952 to 1954, but was shut down in the 1960s.
