Station 17 is a music band from Hamburg , which belongs to the Krautrock genre.

history

In 1989 the musician and healing educator Kai Boysen focused on the idea of recording an album with the residents of residential group 17 of the Evangelical Foundation Alsterdorf . This album was also made with the participation of Michael Rother , Holger Czukay , FM Einheit , Thomas Fehlmann , as well as Markus Grosskopf ( Helloween ) and Kai Hansen ( Gamma Ray ) and was released in 1990 by Mercury / Phonogram .

After several live performances expressed Alfred MoP , label owner of What's So Funny About his interest in the band and released in 1993, the following album Just So .

In the following two years (also due to the band's many tours), the German press landscape became aware of Station 17. The Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Zeit , Der Spiegel and Der Stern reported extensively on the band. The plan to record a live album was dropped in favor of the concert film Station 17 - The Film .

The 1997 album, Scheibe, showed a clear move towards electronic music for the first time, and was recorded on tours through Europe.

The album Bravo followed two years later . However, there was also a change in the line-up of the band due to musical differences.

To bridge the gap, the remix album Hitparade was created in 2001 with remixes by DJ Koze , Cosmic DJ and Thomas Fehlmann . Station 17 was photographed by Anton Corbijn as part of the advertising campaign for the renaming of Aktionproblemkind to Aktion Mensch . These photos were taken indirectly to Daniel Miller , who hired Station 17 for his label Mute .

For the next five years the band fell silent. Boysen focused on founding the inclusive network of professional cultural productions barner16 . Neither Mute nor any other music label showed interest in a new release of Station 17. Then the own label 17rec. founded, which celebrated the first release with the album Mikroprofessor 2006. However, the complexity of the production of the album could not be reproduced in live performances and the band structure broke up.

At this time, among others, the musicians Christian Fleck and Peter Tiedeken ( The Robocop Kraus ) began to work at barner16 and a little later they set up a new band constellation from Station 17. For the next album, the new line-up reflected on the concept of the debut album and worked on the collaboration album Goldstein Variationen with Fettes Brot , Stereo Total and Guildo Horn , among others .

The new line-up from Station 17 then played several tours and festivals such as Fusion , Burg-Herzberg-Festival or the Hurricane Festival . The line-up did not last long: Alex Tsitsigias ( Scrap Line ) joined the band in 2008.

In 2011, Station 17 released the eighth album Fieber and was invited by Joachim Gauck to the Federal President's festival the following year . In 2013 the Federal Agency for Civic Education presented the concept of music and inclusion.

During the production of the follow-up album, another line-up followed. Peter Tiedeken left the band and was replaced by Hauke Röh ( Mrs. Potz ).

Alles für alle appeared in 2014 with a concept that was previously unfamiliar to Station 17. A pop album with political lyrics. After a tour of over 100 concerts for the album, the desire for improvisational music grew stronger again.

In 2017 the plan for a further collaboration album was realized with the record company Bureau B. Station 17 began in the Watt'n'Sound Studio, a former school on the North Sea coast that was converted into a recording studio, with cooperation partners such as Schneider TM , Ulrich Schnauss , faUSt or Pyrolator, the recordings, which were named Blick (2018) and Outlook (2019 ) were published at Bureau B.

In addition, Bureau B published the compilation Werkschau in 2019 .
