UNSD
The tasks of the Statistical Division of the UN include:
- to promote the international comparability of statistical data and the cooperation of the national statistical offices ( Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities CCSA)
- to formulate ethical principles within the framework of statistics
- Define nomenclatures , methods and indicators
- develop the standards for worldwide statistics
- To coordinate the collection of the statistical data required for the evaluation as part of the Millennium Development Goals .
It develops country or area codes for statistical purposes. It uses both three-digit numeric codes and three-digit alphabetic codes assigned by the ISO (see ISO 3166 and ISO 3166-1 coding list ).
The UNSD also defines regional structures and summarizes countries and areas. These summaries are used for statistical purposes, but are also used in other contexts (e.g. in Wikipedia ).
The German economist Stefan Schweinfest has been director of UNSD since July 2014.
