Bell tower

The Catholic parish church of Sainte-Geneviève in Héricy , a municipality in the Seine-et-Marne department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in several phases from the late 12th century. Lead glass windows from the Renaissance are still preserved in the church . In 1908, the church consecrated to St. Genoveva of Paris was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

history

The choir is the oldest part of the church. It was probably started at the end of the 12th century. At the beginning of the 13th century, the two eastern bays of the south aisle followed, the western end of which was originally the bell tower. In the next phase of construction, at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century, the church was extended to the west. The four bays of the main nave were added to the choir and the three western bays of the south aisle to the tower . The large portal was created on the west facade of the main nave, the sculptural decoration of which was destroyed during the Huguenot Wars . At the end of the 16th century, during the last construction phase, the north aisle with its Renaissance portal was built.

architecture

Exterior construction

The massive bell tower has four gables which, like the bell storey , are pierced on all four sides by coupled , slightly pointed sound arcades . The two lower floors of the tower are supported at the corners by multi-stepped buttresses. The outer walls of the aisles also structure protruding, stepped buttresses. The pointed arched main portal of the central nave, which protrudes slightly over the west facade, is framed by archivolts and an unadorned tympanum . A pointed arch window has been cut above the main portal. A delicate rose window opens over the arched renaissance portal of the north aisle .

From the central nave, high, ogival arcades , which rest on mighty columns, open to the two side aisles. The two-bay, straight-closed choir is broken through by three arched windows with modern lead glazing. The entire interior is covered with ribbed vaults with numerous carved keystones . In the north aisle, they are partly designed as hangers . In the basement of the tower there are two consoles decorated with male heads from the Romanesque period.

Leaded glass window

Window of the Nativity

In the north aisle there is a stained glass window from the 16th century with scenes of the Nativity. It consists of three lancets with the Annunciation on the right , the Adoration of the Shepherds in the middle and the Adoration of the Magi on the left . In the tracery on the right pane, the meeting of Anna and Joachim , Mary's parents , can be seen at the golden gate and on the upper pane the flight of the holy family to Egypt. Angels are depicted on the left pane. In other windows only a few fragments of the original lead glazing are preserved.

Tombstones

13th century tombstone

On the wall of the south aisle is the tombstone of Isabeau, the wife of Guillaume Grisart, from the 13th century. A three-pass arch is carved on the tombstone, under which the deceased stands with folded hands. It is wrapped in a cape with elegant folds. An inscription is carved on the edge of the tombstone.

A marble plaque from the 16th century commemorates Nicolas Dieusit, who died in 1553, and his wife Nicole Barbin. The board is provided with an inscription. Above the deceased with their children are shown kneeling in front of the crucified Christ, below you can see the coats of arms of the two families.
