For the first time in 1994 and then until 1997 triathlon races were held in Ottensheim near Linz. In 1998 the Steeltownman moved from Ottensheim to Linz Pichling. In 1999 the race at Pichlinger See was a long distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.1 km running) and in 2000 the half distance (1.2 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running).
Since 2005 , the Linz Triathlon (sprint, short, medium distance) has been held annually in May or June as the second event in the Pleschinger See region, northeast of Linz .
Resumption in 2011
The triathlon as Steeltownman has been held annually in July after an eleven-year break since 2011 over the sprint (750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run) and short distance (1.5 km swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run). The organizer is PSV Tri-Linz .
In 2012, an aquathlon was held for the first time in the Olympic Center in Linz, as ASVÖ Steeltownman Indoor Aquathlon .
Christian Birngruber was able to win the short distance three times in a row between 2011 and 2013. In July 2013, the German Faris Al-Sultan was also at the start, who finished the race in fourth. The Linz police officer Paul Ruttmann won the triathlon on the short distance for the third time in 2017 after 2014 and 2015.
As part of the Steeltownman, the Austrian State Championships Aquathlon should also be held on June 6, 2020, but the race had to be canceled in April due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic . The date for 2021 is to be announced in autumn.
