The Stellmoorer source river is a stream . It rises in Ahrensburg in Schleswig-Holstein and then flows through the Stellmoorer Tunneltal nature reserve in the northeast of the urban area of Hamburg .

geography

The brook has its source at the Brauner Hirsch road in Ahrensburg and flows south from there in the Ahrensburg tunnel valley that was created by ice age meltwater . Not far from its source on the other side of the street, the Hopfenbach rises , which flows north into the Alster . The Stellmoorer Quellenbach flows through the Stellmoor – Ahrensburg Tunneltal nature reserve to the state border . On the Hamburg side, the flow area is also under nature protection in the Stellmoorer Tunneltal nature reserve. The brook is located here in the Rahlstedt district and flows into the Wandse at Höltigbaum street .

The direction of flow of the stream is contrary to the original direction of flow of the ice age meltwater.

ecology

The rather inconspicuous brook is home to a rich animal life. To be found there among other garlic - and common toad , moor - and frog , newts and various forest - and sand lizards . Over thirty species of dragonflies , some of which are on the Red List of Endangered Species , have their home at the stream. Among other things, you can observe the rare moon azure maiden , the great dragonfly or the little pitch dragonfly by the stream. Some fish species, including the gudgeon and the brook lamprey , are also native to the brook.

History

In the 1930s, the stream was straightened and deepened in order to be able to use the surrounding areas better for agriculture . In post-war Germany at the time of the economic miracle , in addition to other drainage work, parts of the brook area were used as allotment gardens and wild rubbish dumps. Alfred Rust and the head of the geological state office Friedrich Grube campaigned for a renaturation from 1970. After the entire area was placed under nature protection between 1978 and 1982, the area surrounding the water developed into a local recreation area. There are designated bike and riding trails around the stream.
