Stennewitz , in Lower Sorbian Sćenojce , is an officially designated residential area and former district of the city of Lübbenau / Spreewald in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in Brandenburg .

location

Stennwitz is located in Niederlausitz in the Spreewald biosphere reserve in the official settlement area of the Sorbs / Wends . Today the place is structurally fused with the city of Lübbenau. Only in the east does Stennewitz border the Zerkwitz district with a small part .

Stennewitz is located north of the state road 49 from Lübben to Cottbus . The Berlin – Görlitz railway runs through the town. The Stennewitzer Hauptgraben and the Alte Stennewitzer Kahnfahrt , both tributaries of the Spree, flow north of Stennewitz .

history

The area around Stennewitz was probably settled as early as the Bronze Age, as evidenced by corresponding archaeological finds near the village. Stennewitz was first mentioned in a document in 1315 as "Stenewicz". The place name comes from the Sorbian language and means "place where there are young dogs". According to another possible explanation, the place name is based on the Slavic personal name "Sden".

Stennewitz was part of the Lübbenau rule . As in neighboring Lübbenau, the population lived largely from growing fruit and vegetables . In the 18th century, Kossaten from Stennewitz ran an extensive vegetable trade with other cities. According to the topographical-statistical overview of the administrative district of Frankfurt ad Oder from 1844, Stennewitz had 252 inhabitants at that time, who lived in 49 houses. The place was parish to Lübbenau. In 1867 Stennewitz had 260 inhabitants.

According to its type of settlement, Stennewitz was originally designed as a dead-end village. The connecting roads to today's L49 and the road to the east were only built after 1945. The floor plan of the village from 1800 can still be seen today, and the buildings with house numbers 13, 14, 15 and 20 also date from this time. Originally, Stennewitz was crossed by the Stennewitzer Kahnfahrt, which connected the place with the rivers of the Spreewald.

After the agreements of the Congress of Vienna , Stennewitz came to the Kingdom of Prussia and was in the district of Calau . On December 26, 1929, Stennewitz was incorporated into Lübbenau . On July 25, 1952, Stennewitz was assigned to the newly formed Calau district in the Cottbus district . After the reunification , the district was in the Calau district in Brandenburg . After the district reform in Brandenburg on December 6, 1993 , Stennewitz was assigned to the newly formed district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz . After the community reform on October 26, 2003, Stennewitz was downgraded to a residential area .
