After graduating in 1985, he was prefect at the boarding school of the Bonn Jesuit College for one year . In 1987 he was ordained a deacon and moved to the St. Paulin Basilica in Trier. In 1988 he was ordained a priest in the High Cathedral and was then chaplain for three years in the parish of Adenau in the Eifel. He began to make preaching contributions for radio and television, e.g. B. for the programs So Seen ( SAT 1 ), Pastor in Breakfast TV ( RTL ) or Art and Embassy (RTL).

From 1991 to 1995 Wahl worked as a school pastor at the Alfred Delp School in Hargesheim and as a pastor in the parish of St. Nikolaus in Bad Kreuznach . In 1996 he switched to the Catholic broadcasting work of the diocese in Saarbrücken . In addition to training at the Institute for the Promotion of Young Journalists (ifp), he completed a traineeship as a radio and television journalist at Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR). Since then, SWR and SR have been the focus of his work as "itinerant preachers in the media jungle". In addition, he took on a pastoral care assignment in the parishes of the Auersmacher parish , later in the city pastoral care at the St. Johann Basilica in Saarbrücken. From 1999, Wahl was the spokesman for the ARD program Das Wort zum Sonntag and received the only television prize so far for a word on Sunday, the “Golden Gong”. After 12 years he ended this TV engagement at his own request.

Bishop Reinhard Marx appointed Wahl to the Trier diocese leadership in 2003 and appointed him head of the main department "Communication, Education, Media and Pastoral Services" in the Episcopal General Vicariate. On November 9, 2004 he was also appointed vicar of the High Cathedral in Trier. Easter 2006 appointed him Pope Benedict XVI. to the monsignor (papal honorary chaplain). After the restructuring of the Episcopal Vicariate General in November 2006, Wahl took over the new strategy area “Communication and Media” as one of the six directors, which brought together all media modules of the diocese in one networked area. Together with his employees, he developed the concept of "integrated communication".

In 2012, Bishop Stephan Ackermann complied with his wish to give up the post of communications director after nine years (“I took over the post for a while from the start” - “My job is done now”). After a sabbatical period of several months , u. a. in the community of Sant'Egidio in Rome, Wahl was commissioned in 2013 to work as a pastor in the parish community of Waldrach ; in addition, he is still in charge of preaching in the media.
