Stephen J. Benkovic
Stephen James Benkovic (born April 20, 1938 in Orange , New Jersey ) is an American chemist at Pennsylvania State University .
Life
Benkovic earned both a bachelor's degree in chemistry and English literature from Lehigh University in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania in 1960 . At Cornell University in Ithaca , New York , he received a Ph.D. in 1963 from Thomas C. Bruice. in organic chemistry . As a postdoctoral fellow , Benkovic worked with Thomas C. Bruice at the University of California, Santa Barbara , before becoming an Assistant Professor at Pennsylvania State University in 1965 . In 1967 he became an associate professor and in 1970 he was given a full professorship. Today (as of 2011) Benkovic is Evan Pugh Professor and Eberly Chair for Chemistry there.
Act
Benkovic has made important contributions to biochemical done research, particularly for mechanistic understanding of how enzymes in the transfer of groups . Using chemical , physical and biochemical methods, he was able to make a significant contribution to the elucidation of the complex enzyme systems involved in DNA replication or the biosynthesis of purine . He has also improved methods of identifying biological targets and developing new drugs .
