Steven Aaron Rosenberg (born August 2, 1940 in New York City ) is an American surgeon and cancer researcher at the National Cancer Institute . Rosenberg is considered a pioneer in cancer immunotherapy .

Life

Rosenberg is the child of Polish-Jewish immigrants. He attended the prestigious Bronx High School of Science . Rosenberg graduated from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland with a bachelor's degree in 1961 and an MD in 1964 with a medical degree. He completed his internship and residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston , Massachusetts , and in 1968 earned a Ph.D. for his work The Proteins of Erythrocyte Membranes at neighboring Harvard University. in biophysics . He then stayed as a research assistant with John David at Harvard University before moving to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , Maryland. Since 1974 he has been head of the surgery department there. In 1979 he was appointed professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda. In addition, since 1988 he has been a professor of surgery at George Washington University in Washington, DC

Rosenberg has been married to Alice O'Connell since 1968 and the couple have three daughters.

Act

Rosenberg treated advanced tumor diseases with T lymphocytes that had been modified with interleukin-2 (IL-2) to form lymphokine-activated killer cells ( LAK cells ), and with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, TIL) that were treated with IL- 2 had been stimulated. Together with W. French Anderson , Rosenberg carried out the first successful studies on gene therapy in humans by introducing the gene for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) into TIL. Rosenberg identified numerous tumor antigens that are considered target molecules for the development of a "cancer vaccine".

Rosenberg was spokesman for the medical team that treated colon cancer in 1985 under the then US President Ronald Reagan .
