Geographically, Stillwater is northeast of the "Oklahoma City Metropolis", which consists of seven administrative districts around the capital Oklahoma City and has a total of 1,192,989 inhabitants. Hence, Stillwater is often thought of as a satellite city of Oklahoma City. For 2010, Stillwater conducted another census that found a total population of 45,688. In advance, the population for 2010 was estimated at over 50,000. By reaching the 50,000 mark, the “fastest growing city of Oklahoma” could have achieved the status of a statistical conurbation and thus become more attractive for industry and the service sector.

population

In 2000, the US Federal Statistical Office put the population of Stillwater at 39,065. At this point in time, 28.5% of the population were between 20 and 24 years old. 53.3% of all Stillwater residents were 24 years of age or younger in 2000. The median age was 23.9 years. The reason for the low average age of the city is the high number of students (23,307, corresponds to 59.6%) at Oklahoma State University , which is based in Stillwater.

history

In 1879, what is now Oklahoma was still uninhabited. Elias C. Boudinot, a MP for the Arkansas Secession, wanted to declare this land as "public land" in 1879 and thus make it available to his customers on the MKT - Railroad. But the American President Rutherford B. Hayes wanted to prevent the penetration of Anglo-Americans into the protected land and issued a proclamation on April 26, 1879, which forbade it to enter this country, since it belongs to the Indians. But it was already too late. Only five years later, in 1884, the government could no longer withstand popular pressure and the District Court in Topeka , Kansas ruled that it was no longer a crime to settle on this land from now on. Stillwater was the first settlement to be established on December 12, 1884. After the first land run (see Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 22, 1889, other areas were settled by Anglo-Americans.

Economy and culture

Oklahoma State University is the city's largest employer, landowner and cultural hub. There has been a tremendous change in Stillwater over the past few decades. New stores and shopping centers have opened, and large, national chains are replacing smaller, regional stores. The reason for this is the enormous expansion of the population and the increasing youthful age demographics. All of this results in a decline in the importance of downtown Stillwater. Many shops are empty and there are only a few private shops left.

The bar mile "The Strip"

Due to the high number of students, most of the public activity takes place around the campus. There is a thriving gastronomy and pub mile known as "The Strip". In some of the pubs on Washington Street, which is the actual name of the pub mile, you can from time to time the nationally successful bands of Stillwater such as No Justice , The All-American Rejects , Cross Canadian Ragweed , Jason Boland , Other Lives or Listen to colourmusic . The Red Dirt music scene founded in Stillwater has brought out various country musicians in recent years, some of which have made them nationally known. Stillwater also has an industrial side that is often overlooked. Rolling Stone and ESPN magazines are printed here at the Quebecor World factory. One of the largest employers after college, Mercury Marine is a manufacturer of marine engines and aft landing gear. Armstrong produces floor tiles. National Standard manufactures tires. Stillwater Milling is a huge feed and wheat storage facility.

Unemployment in Stillwater is 5.4% as of June 30, 2009, below the national average (5.8%).

education

Stillwater is one of the spiritual centers of Oklahoma. Oklahoma State University has more than 32,000 students. In addition, the Northern Oklahoma College and the Meridian Technology Center, each with a branch in Stillwater, are located.

traffic

The city's main streets are two-lane and offer good connections to the neighboring cities of Tulsa and Oklahoma City. However, there is no rail connection or tram network. As part of the expansion of Oklahoma State University, a good bus network has built up within the campus, but also beyond. Not only students can use the university bus, but also residents and tourists.
