Stonehammer ( English for 'stone hammer') is a Canadian right-wing radical music group from Toronto , which was founded in 1992 under the name Aryan . The singer also performs solo under his pseudonym Griffin .

history

David Allen Surette was a founding member and bassist of the apolitical Oi band Vacant Lot . The Vacant Lot concerts, with their Oi-heavy music, mainly attracted skinheads, including racists who made no secret of their convictions at the concerts. The band members asked their bass player, who was already active in the neo-Nazi scene in Toronto, not to react positively to the Hitler salutes and Sieg-Heil screams that were demonstrated in the audience from time to time. They also criticized the choice of his fan t-shirts worn at concerts by right-wing extremist bands such as Skrewdriver and Rahowa . After the ongoing conflict, Surette left the band in a dispute and convinced the drummer Wayne to also leave the band.

Griffin formed his own band in 1992. The band name Aryan (English Aryan / Aryan ) should remove all doubts in advance, so that his concerts would not be attended by people who do not expect a racist band. He got musical support from the band Rahowa.

The first album was released in 1993 on Resistance Records , the label of Rahowa frontman George Burdi . New Storm Rising was chosen as the album title . The album contained religious songs such as God, Race & Nation , Cross & Sword and Fiery Cross with lyrics written within the framework of racist Christian doctrine. These songs reflected religious racism, such as that preached by the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nations . Other themes on the album were the Canadian homeland, but also ridicule songs about Afro-Americans who are stigmatized as rapists and drug dealers because of their skin color , which resulted in the album being indexed in Germany.

After the album, Aryan played at many RAC concerts in the US and Canada. Often times the band members traveled together with the members of the band People Haters . In the summer of 1996, Griffin accepted the invitation from the music network Blood & Honor Germany to come to Berlin and lived in Germany for several weeks, performing with guest musicians from other right-wing rock bands on the weekends. During this time Griffin made contact with other right-wing rock bands and producers who belonged to the international Blood & Honor network, e. B. to Ken McLellan , Steve Calladine , Kraftschlag , Landser and others. The neo-Nazi rock club Vandalen made Griffin an honorary member.

In 1997 the second CD followed under the title Where the Iron Eagle Flies . The pianist and guitarist Jon Latvis von Rahowa took part in this album . The album was also published by Resistance Records, which has since been managed by the National Alliance under the management of Erich Gliebe . While Burdi gave the bands freedom and operated the label as an alternative label for neo-Nazi bands, Gliebe now operated the label economically and as a propaganda weapon. The album was designed by the label so that it did not contain any criminally relevant discrimination in the lyrics, in order to make the album available for purchase in more countries. The album dealt in its lyrics with homeland, dreams of freedom, the persecution of rights and other topics. The included song Hail You is dedicated to the Berlin neo-Nazi Michael Regener , who was Landser's singer at the time.

In 1998 Surette took part in a music project produced by BfG Records under the name "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", together with the musicians from Bound for Glory , People Haters and Landser.

In 1999 the band was renamed. The new name was Stonehammer. The reasons lay in the fact that a turning point had taken place in the band's history. Rougue and Jon Latvis had left the band, the new musicians Bob and Gregg changed the band's typical style of music. In addition, the once Christian-minded Griffin was now a follower of Odinism , which was noticeable in the more recent lyrics of the band. The new album was released in 1999 by Panzerfaust Records and contained the band name as the album title. The song VFFV is a dedication to his rocker club Vandalen from Berlin.

In 2013, Griffin formed a project band called "Skrew You" with the band Warlord in order to re-record the last studio recording of Skrewdriver , on which the Warlord singer Steve Calladine also played guitar , on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Hail Victory . The majority of the songs were released as part of a 2014 Skrewdriver Memorial compilation album.

In 2013 he returned with a split album with the Canadian band Vinland Warriors , followed by his own ballad CD in the same year.

Since 2015 he has been playing as a solo artist under the name Stonehammer at right-wing extremist concerts that take place in Germany and other European countries.

Texts

The lyrics deal with defamatory lyrics about Afro-Americans, movements and groups that campaign against racism . Diabolical songs about homosexuals and dropouts are also designed . The alleged lack of justice of the Canadian police and the Canadian judiciary , viewed in relation to the Canadian neo-Nazis, is also addressed in some songs. Many songs also take up the resistance against the allegedly imminent extinction of the “ Europid race ”. The alleged corrupt government allegedly infiltrated by Zionists is also discussed. Another big theme of the band's lyrics is paganism , e.g. B. in the lyrics to the song Cry of the Raven , the band poetically describes how a warrior who fell on the battlefield is brought to Asgard by the Valkyries . Some songs are about international cohesion between nationalists in the world. A hymn of praise includes homage to the former deputy of the Führer and convicted major war criminal Rudolf Hess . The relationship with Griffin's wife at the time is also thematized in the songs such as B. My Love .

music

The rock songs are musically accompanied by a rhythm guitar , lead guitar , electric bass and drums . The music alternates with hard rock and Oi! . On the albums of Stonehammer there are also songs which adapted to the direction of Speed Metal , e.g. B. Hail Budapest or Crazy . The singer changes the octaves in the different songs. Less on the band albums, but mainly on the solo albums, the quiet songs settle in the ballad style or the folk genre. The calm singing in the ballad-like songs is usually only accompanied by an acoustic guitar , piano and drums. A bagpipe is also used on newer albums .

Private

Griffin was married to Becky, with whom he has three children, who in turn have made him a grandfather of three. His grandfather was born in Austria-Hungary before he emigrated to Canada after the First World War , while his mother has British ancestors.

He has been tattooing since 1979 and ran a tattoo parlor in Toronto called White Wolf Studios. He is heavily tattooed himself. There are a few tattoos on his always shaved head. A horned skull is emblazoned over his forehead, over his right ear is the image of a skull and at the back of the head is the image of a clansman in a hooded robe. The picture of Michael Regener extends on his back. Another trademark was his long beard , now he wears a untrimmed beard. Sometimes he also wears a leather vest with the insignia of his rocker club (vandals). For the past few years, concerts have been in a kilt , belt with a sporran with a graphic by Mjölnir , long kilt socks with ribbons and brogue shoes .
