Stranger than Paradise is an American independent film directed by Jim Jarmusch from 1984 starring John Lurie , Eszter Bálint and Richard Edson . Originally conceived and shot as a 30-minute short film (1982), Jarmusch Stranger Than Paradise expanded into a full-length film in three chapters.

action

The film calmly narrates the unspectacular experiences of the self-proclaimed " hipster " Willie from New York City , his Hungarian cousin Eva and Willie's friend Eddie. The plot is partly absurd , but this is not artificial, but an expression of the everyday nature of the story.

The first part of the film (The New World) is about Eva's arrival in New York, the weeks she lives with her cousin, and her departure to Cleveland , where she wants to visit her aunt. In the second part (One Year Later) Willie and Eddie visit her there. In the third part (Paradise) the three travel together to Florida .

criticism

"Aesthetically appealing design, carried by excellent actors, the film tells its dreary story with many ironic twists and cheerful, melancholy moments."

Film music

The soundtrack comes from main actor John Lurie, who became known as a jazz musician and composer. The piece I Put a Spell On You by the blues musician Screamin 'Jay Hawkins can be heard repeatedly during the film . Hawkins himself played a central role as the night porter in Jarmusch's Mystery Train five years later .
