Schönwalde (Altmark) is a village in the "Unified Municipality of the City of Tangerhütte " in the south of the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

The place in the southeast of the Altmark lies between Dollgraben and the Tangier river in the immediate vicinity of Tangerhütte. The terrain gradually slopes down from the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide in the west towards the Elbe valley . The city of Stendal is about 20 kilometers from Schönwalde.

history

The place, originally founded by Wenden , was repopulated by Dutch colonists in the 12th century and first mentioned in a document as Schonenwolde in 1191 . From 1295 it was called Sconewalde and from the 18th century the name Schönwalde .

In the general church visit of 1600 Hans Osthern and Clauss Schultze are named as church leaders, the latter was also Lehnschulze. The four church elders were then: Hans Blume, Hinrich Winter, Thomas Jacob and Hans Nahrstedt.

The first school in the village is documented in 1733. Schönwalde owned a windmill, which was located in front of the northern entrance to the village, and a so-called bee fence a little south of the village. In 1840, in addition to the jug on the Schulzenhof, another jug was mentioned in the village.

It is a typical street village with 38 lots which are located along the street. A plot of land is on a side road. The courtyard numbering from 1 to 26 was done clockwise, starting with the old Lehnschulzenhof in the center of the village. Due to the separation in the 1840s, more courtyards were added at the south end.

In the school chronicle of 1886 the following can be read:

“The location of the main street takes its direction from south to north. The southern end of this street is closed off by the village church with the surrounding cemetery. From this main street there is a side street that is much shorter than the main street. This leads to the point where the village crosses a ditch, which is crossed by a bridge where the transition to the open air leads. But also where the delimitation of the place takes place and the open field begins, there many of the local inhabitants of the village have already settled, that already a large area with buildings, which from the local people have settled partly in the village and partly from outside . Some of those who have grown up here in front of the village are concerned with some agriculture, and some of them also run several secondary trades, especially as bricklayers, carpenters or weavers. "

The village street was paved with cobblestones in autumn 1907. Hermann Thomas gave the sand he needed from his mill. The cobblestones were replaced by an asphalt surface in 2010.

The current village church was completed in 1851 after the Romanesque previous church (with a massive nave and wooden tower) was destroyed in the village fire on the night of July 28th to 29th, 1847.

As a result of the fire, farms no. 8, 24 and 25 from the very densely built-up village center had to move to the ends and "of course" took their farmstead numbers with them.

At the end of 1910 the new school house (No. 6) was moved into. There was space for a classroom and the teacher's apartment on the ground floor, a room and a smokehouse on the top floor. The village community center, which was renovated as part of the village renewal program, is located in the old classroom of the school and an extension that was completed in 1988.

Through the Berlin-Hanover night flight line established in 1927, an intermediate light was installed on Kostaweg for orientation and an emergency runway was created.

Since the village got two new church bells in 1931, the old tower from 1851 was replaced by a wider half-timbered tower. The church roof was last re-covered in 1994. In 2011 the tower got a new infill with red instead of yellow brick. In this context, the time capsule in the tower ball was also opened.

On May 31, 2010, Schönwalde (Altmark) merged with the other municipalities of the Tangerhütte-Land administrative community to form the new “Unified Municipality of the City of Tangerhütte”.

Volunteer firefighter

According to the document, the voluntary fire brigade founded on May 18, 1910 still shapes village life today. However, the first beginnings of a local defense go back further. Around 1795 a "large fire engine" was purchased. The purchase of a new syringe was mentioned after the village fire of 1847. In the fire mentioned above, the community fire station and the school were also victims of the flames. As early as 1858, the community paid a syringe master an annual salary.

In addition to fire fighting, there are annual competitions in the “ wet fire fighting ” calendar. The fire brigade has been district champion seven times since 1975. The former post office and “ Konsum ” sales point was converted into a fire station in 2000 . In the same year the fire brigade got its first fire engine . The " Ford Transit " from 1967 was a gift from the Anderbeck community in the Harz foreland. Until then, the fire brigade owned u. a. only one portable pump trailer (TSA). Since 1996 the village has been organizing an Easter or May fire every year with the help of the comrades, depending on the weather.

On December 9, 2018, the comrades of the Schönwalde volunteer fire brigade took over a FIAT fire engine from the Bellingen volunteer fire brigade.

Culture and sights

  • The evangelical church has five stained glass windows in the apse from the Quedlinburg glass painting establishment Ferdinand Müller . In 2009/2010, based on an idea by Pastor Matthias Heinrich, six so-called windows of hope were designed by local artists and executed by the company Glas Wilde from Bellingen. The windows in the nave show images of hope from the Bible:
    • "The rainbow over the ark" by Horst Menzel (Schönwalde [Altmark]) on Genesis 9: 8-17
    • “You set the table for me” by Hermann Dahms (Tangerhütte) to Ps 23,5
    • “The greening sprout from old roots” by Margita Schaef (Schernebeck) on Isa 11, 1-4
    • “You are the light of the world” by Markus Schrot (Tangerhütte) on Mt 15: 14-16
    • “The old and the new man” by Benno Zöllner (Bittkau (Elbe) / Berlin) to Eph 4.17–24
    • “The new Jerusalem” by Horst Menzel (Schönwalde (Altmark)) on Rev 21: 1-6
  • Also in 2010 the artistic painting of the nave and the apse from 1897 was restored. This “splendid decoration” created by painter Krügermann from Schönebeck was inaugurated on Reformation Day in 1897 after seven weeks of work.
  • The "Gallery to the Schönwalder Church" was opened in autumn 2010. It is located in the syringe house built in 1913, which was converted and redesigned for the gallery.
  • On March 10, 2017, the Heimat- und Feuerwehrförderverein Schönwalde / Altmark eV was founded
  • The Heimatstube has been showing agricultural implements and utensils from earlier times since the 1970s. However, it is no longer open to visitors.
