Sumit Nagal (born August 16, 1997 in Jhajjar ) is an Indian tennis player .

Career

Junior Tour

Sumit Nagal played quite successfully on the ITF Junior Tour since the end of 2010. He played in all four Grand Slams until the end of his junior career in 2015 . He achieved his greatest success in 2015 at Wimbledon in doubles, when he surprisingly won the tournament with Lý Hoàng Nam . In the final they defeated Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan in straight sets. In the same year he also achieved his best placement in the junior world rankings with rank 23 . During his youth career he also trained at the Alexander Waske Tennis University .

Professional tour

During his time as a junior player, Nagal also completed a third-rate ITF Future Tour tournament for the first time in 2013 . He only achieved success there from mid-2015 when he won three futures in singles and one in doubles. He also made his debut on the ATP Challenger Tour in Kolkata , where he lost at the beginning. At the end of the year he was already in the top 500. In 2016 he was able to improve his ranking to 334th place after he had two future titles and a few appearances on the Challenger Tour.

In 2017 there were four future titles that the Indian won. In addition, he won the Challenger in Bangalore , which he was able to move up to position 225 in the ranking. At the beginning of 2018 he qualified for the ATP World Tour event in Pune, where he passed for the first time after 2014 and 2015 and moved into the main draw. There he lost straight to the other qualifier Ilya Iwaschka .

Davis Cup

Sumit Nagal played for the Indian Davis Cup team for the first time in 2016 , where he lost in dead rubber to Marc López .

In 2017, when Nagal was supposed to play for his country again, there was an uproar when Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj took the player off the team at short notice after reports from 2016 came to light that Sumit Nagal was due to hangovers Should have missed training sessions. Nagal contradicted the allegations and was backed by ex-player Somdev Devvarman . He explained that Nagal was not available for the Davis Cup because he had been curing a shoulder injury since December 2016.
