Mario Party ( Japanese : マ リ オ パ ー テ ィ , Hepburn : Mario Pāti ) is a video game series with the characters of the Super Mario series, which is developed by Hudson Soft (later Nd Cube ) and distributed by Nintendo . It is a virtual board game that can be played as a single player in story mode or in party mode with a maximum of eight players. In Mario Party e is a card game with the Nintendo e-Reader can be used. The individual parts of the series appeared on the Nintendo 64 , the Nintendo GameCube , the Game Boy Advance , the Nintendo DS , the Wii , the Nintendo 3DS , the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch .

Gameplay

Party mode

The players in turn roll a six-sided die, which, however, shows numbers from 1 to 10, and move their pawns accordingly on the playing field. At the end of a round, players are divided into teams based on the color of the field they are on. They then compete against each other in a randomly selected mini-game .

The various Mario Party games contain around 60–80 different mini-games, which mostly require skill, but whose outcome partly depends on luck alone. There are coins to be won within the mini-games. As the game progresses, these coins can then be exchanged for stars.

The winner of a session is the person who could get the most stars and coins at the end of the specified round playing time, whereby the stars have priority in the counting.

In Mario Party 1 - 6 , a maximum of four players can participate in the game. In Mario Party 7 this number has been increased to up to eight players. The four controllers are distributed to two players each, who thus “share” one controller. Missing players are supplemented by computer players. In Mario Party 8 it is again reduced to a maximum of four players.

In Mario Party 6 & 7 , some mini-games can be controlled with a microphone belonging to the game . This gives instructions to your own character that are implemented by the game. Mario Party 8 relies on the special motion-sensitive controllers of the Wii. The microphone mode is omitted here, and only up to four players can compete against each other again. The nunchuk (additional controller with 3D joystick) is only used in a mini game in the extra game palace.

At Mario Party Advance you could only visit one real game board. It was more of a single player game. For the first time, Mario Party DS could also be played with the touchscreen. It was also possible to play with three other players, only one player having to own the game module. This principle was continued with Mario Party: Island Tour .

In Mario Party 9 and 10 , there is a changed game system in which the coins were abolished. Instead, the game is played only with stars, which take over the function of the coins from the previous offshoots. The winner is whoever has the most stars in the end. In addition, in both games, all players are on the move in a shared vehicle, which is controlled alternately by each player and thus advanced on the game board.

All parts of the series live from the fact that human players participate and thus as few characters as possible are controlled by the console. Mario Party is clearly a party game and less suitable for single players.

Mini game mode

In addition to the party mode, every Mario Party game has a mini-game mode in which the mini-games can be played without the board game. The mini-games vary from game to game.

The Mario Party published on December 18, 1998 is the first part of the successful Mario Party series . The game was made by Hudson Soft and published by Nintendo . Like all its successors, Mario Party is based on a board game.

The player can choose between the characters Mario , Luigi , Peach , Yoshi , Wario and Donkey Kong . Each player represents a specific color. Mario the color red, Luigi the color green, Peach the color pink, Yoshi the color light green, Wario the color purple and Donkey Kong represents the color yellow. In the game, each player must roll the dice and then advance the number rolled on the field. This playing field consists of various individual fields. An important single field is, for example, the blue field , if the player stands on this he receives three coins, if he stands on a red field he loses three coins. The event field has various effects that can help the player, but also damage. Another important field is the Bowser field , here the player plays a roulette with Bowser . If each player has thrown the dice once, a mini-game starts and the player receives coins for winning. But the main goal is to collect stars. In the end, the player with the most stars wins. If two players have the same number of stars, count the coins collected.

In addition to this main game mode , the player can also explore the small mushroom town . There you can listen to all the pieces of music in the game as well as the sound effects of the individual characters or play all of the unlocked mini-games. The player's stars, coins and items are stored in the mushroom bank . Items that can bring benefits later in the game can be purchased in the mushroom shop .

Mario Party 2

Mario Party 2 was released by Nintendo on December 17, 1999 as the successor to Mario Party for the Nintendo 64 . Like its predecessor, it was manufactured by Hudson Soft .

Mario Party 2's gameplay is largely similar to that of Mario Party . The game is played again on a game board, on which there are various fields that add or subtract coins for the player or trigger a certain action. At the end of each round, the four opponents compete in a mini-game to win new coins. Stars have to be collected again in Mario Party 2 .

Mario Party 2 also contains some innovations. The playing fields are assigned certain themes, a pirate land , a western land , a space land , a mystery land , a horror land and a bowser land are playable. The outfits of the players are visually different in each of the countries. The ability to carry items with you is also new. In the first part, the items only had gameplay effects; in the second part of the series, objects can now be stored in an inventory and used as required.

Since December 24, 2010, Mario Party 2 can also be purchased in the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console .

Mario Party 3 , released on December 7, 2000, is the last game in the Mario Party series on the Nintendo 64 .

In Mario Party 3 Two new characters are introduced: Princess Daisy of Sarasaland and Wario's brother Waluigi .

For the most part, the gameplay does not differ from its predecessors, but some innovations have been introduced, such as the so-called duel boards . A one-on-one game is played here, which differs slightly from the conventional group boards. The elementary task here is namely to take five heart points from the opposing player by attacks in order to win. The respective players can protect themselves from attacks or carry out attacks themselves.

The 70 mini-games of Mario Party 3 have been completely redesigned and can again be played in 1 on 3, 2 on 2 or everyone against everyone modes.

Mario Party 4

Mario Party 4 was released on October 21, 2002. It was the first game in the Mario Party series that appeared on the Nintendo GameCube .

The gameplay of Mario Party 4 is almost identical to that of its predecessors. In addition to the actual story mode, you can also play extra mini-games in Mario Party 4 . These solo mini-games run for the most part like the normal mini-games, with the difference that the level of difficulty of these solo mini-games has been increased in some cases and that you don't play against opponents here, but rather according to the highscore principle . In addition to these extra mini-games, Mario Party 4 offers some new features, such as the fact that gifts that you receive in story mode can be collected in a small house belonging to the character and set up as furniture.

Mario Party 5

Mario Party 5 was released on November 10, 2003.

The gameplay hardly differs from that of Mario Party 4 . However, as of Mario Party 5 , Donkey Kong is no longer a playable character. The items are replaced by capsules that can either be used yourself or thrown onto other playing fields. In Mario Party 5 the Super Duel mode was introduced, in which the player assembles vehicles and then controls them. Various parts can be bought separately and then assembled. With these vehicles you can then compete against an AI or other players in various tournaments, such as Capture the Flag .

Mario Party 8

Mario Party 9

Mario Party 9 was announced on June 7, 2011 at E3 . It was released on March 2, 2012 for the Wii . It was developed by Nd Cube . Mario Party 9 differs from its predecessor in that the players no longer move individually across the board, but instead all of the characters are on the move with the same vehicle, which is controlled alternately by the players. At the beginning of the party mode, it is no longer possible to select how many rounds the game should last, instead the game only ends as soon as the goal of the largely linear route has been reached and the boss opponent mini-game, another novelty of the offshoot, has been completed . Furthermore, the currency system of the earlier parts has been abolished: in Mario Party 9, players are limited to collecting mini-stars, which they can earn through mini-games and special field events. The winner is the player who has the most ministerial stars at the end of the game.

Mario Party 10

Mario Party 10 was announced at E3 on June 10, 2014 , and was released for Wii U on March 20, 2015 . Up to five players can play on one console, with the gamepad player taking on the role of Bowser. Donkey Kong is now playable again. Among other things, an amiibo series has been published especially for this game . With these you can play on a game board specially created for the amiibo. Each amiibo replaces part of the game board with a new one that is specific to the character. In addition, you roll the amiibo by placing it on the reader. The Amiibo range consists of Mario , Luigi , Yoshi , Peach , Bowser and Toad . The Mario Amiibo in the colors silver and gold has only been released in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Super Mario Party

Super Mario Party was announced at E3 on June 12, 2018 and was released for Nintendo Switch on October 5, 2018 . The game is developed by Nd Cube .

The game is based more closely on the older games in the series. For the first time since Mario Party 8 , coins can be collected again. The players also move individually across the field again. The character-specific dice are new in Super Mario Party . In addition, the so-called “buddy phone” was introduced in Super Mario Party. This makes it possible to summon a helper who supports the player with his specific die.

There are different game modes:

  • Partner Party: In this mode you play in teams of two. The numbers of the two characters are added together and each character can move freely on the field. On the way you have to collect stars and coins and play mini-games. There are several allies on the field who are helpful during the game.

Reviews

The series received mostly good reviews.

“Mario Party is actually the perfect party game for in between when there are a few friends around. It offers a lot of fun over a long period of time and the mini-games are very varied, provided you don't know them all inside out. Nevertheless, there is something that can be criticized for the game negatively: as much fun as the mini-games are, they only tempt you to push the N64 controller to its limits. […] Apart from this shortcoming - […] - Mario Party is one of the best multiplayer games Nintendo has to offer - It is also a lot of fun on its own, but after all, the "party" in Mario Party does not mean "alone" "."

- Toad Town.de

“With friends hui, alone ugh! What is an entertaining game with friends turns into a boring game of dice on its own. More variety would have been good. "

“Mario Party DS offers rock-solid entertainment, but it is primarily aimed at children and teenagers. They are then offered child-friendly fun. Adults especially like the multiplayer games. Together with the large scope of the game and the successful presentation, this results in a consistently 'good' game. "

“Mario Party 8 is a game for young and old. It's just addicting. The courses are varied. […] [For] one thing is definitely taken care of: 'Good mood and fun evenings with Mario Party 8'. "
