Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online ( ソードアート·オンラインオルタナティブガンゲイル·オンライン Sodo Ato Onrain Orutanatibu Gangeiru Onrain ) is a light novel series by Keiichi Sigsawa which has been published since December 2014 and an offshoot of Reki Kawaharas Sword Art Online is. In 2015, the light novel series was implemented as a manga by Tadadi Tamori ; In April 2018, the adaptation as a 12-part anime television series followed by the animation studio 3Hz .

By events in the VR - MMORPG Sword Art Online were caught in the 10,000 players in the virtual world, the popularity took on such video games for fear that similar incidents could occur again rapidly. After the incident in Sword Art Online, the NerveGear was withdrawn, destroyed and replaced by the AmuSphere. With the release of the AmuSphere and the license-free development aid package Seed , the popularity increased again.
The story follows the student Karen Kohiruimaki, who developed an inferiority complex due to her height of 1.83 m and withdrew from society as a result. Through her best friend Miyu Shinohara, a video game freak, Karen also starts playing an MMO: Gun Gale Online. There she is the small and cute Llenn, who due to her appearance - she is dressed completely in pink - and her high agility as a player killer ("PK") quickly gets the nickname "pink demon" in the virtual world.
One day Llenn meets the player Pitohui, with whom she makes friends very quickly. She suggests Llenn to take part in the Squad Jam, an online tournament for groups similar to the Battle of Bullets for individual players . Since Pitohui cannot take part in the tournament on that day due to a personal appointment, she suggests that Llenn and a player named "M" form a team and play the Squad Jam.

- Karen Kohiruimaki is a girl from Obihiro , Hokkaido who develops an inferiority complex in the real world due to her tall body and therefore has few friends. She begins playing Gun Gale Online , where she impersonates the character Llenn. Llenn is small and cute. Because of their appearance - she wears a pink uniform - it can be on certain terrain camouflage. Her weapon is also a pink FN P90 , which she calls "P-Chan".

- Elsa Kanzaki is a popular singer. She is a beta tester of Sword Art Online , who was unable to log in on the day the game was released due to various incidents and was thus spared from the incidents. Angry about not having participated in the "Survival Game", she developed a psychopathic trait, which should later become her in-game character Pitohui .

- Gōshi Asōgi is Kanzaki's manager and best friend. Previously very overweight and regularly chasing her , he saved her from a businessman who was assaulting. He later became a victim of Kanzaki's sexual assault and a kind of personal secretary. Goshi, however, doesn't seem to mind and he lost weight. Together with Kanzaki, he logged into Gun Gale Online under his character M. There he embodies a strong avatar in green combat uniform. He chose his player name because of its masochistic character. He's a medium range sniper ; his weapons are a Mk 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle and a HK45 . Gōshi has a broad knowledge of military combat tactics and techniques.

- Miyu Shinohara is Karen's best friend and video game fanatic. She gives Karen advice on VR MMOs. Usually she plays Alfheim Online as Sylphe . However, she converted her character to Gun Gale Online in order to be able to participate in the Squad Jam as Fukaziroh. Your weapons are two grenade launchers .

Light novel
On September 18, 2014, Dengeki Bunko magazine announced that Keiichi Sigsawa was working on a light novel series based on Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online . Kawahara himself was a supervisor; the drawings were designed by Kōhaku Kuroboshi . ASCII Media Works released the first volume in Dengeki Bunko on December 10th of the same year. On November 18, 2017, the Yen Press announced at Anime NYC that it had licensed the light novel series for the North American market .
In the first half of 2015, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online was eleven of the best-selling light novel series, with the first two volumes each making it onto the list. Volume four made it into the 25 best-selling light novel volumes in the first half of 2016. In May 2018, it was announced that the series had sold one million printed editions.
Manga
A manga implementation took place on October 7, 2015 by Tadadi Tamori which was published in Dengeki Maoh by the ASCII Media Works publishing house . On April 15 of the same year, Yen Press announced at Sakura-Con that it had secured the publishing rights to the manga for North America.
Anime
On October 1, 2017, an anime adaptation was announced as part of the Dengeki Bunko Festival . Directed by Masayuki Sakoi , while the storyboard was written by Yōsuke Kuroda . 3Hz was announced as the animation studio . The character design comes from Yoshio Kosakai . Eir Aoi sings the song in the opening credits with Meteor 流星 Ryūsei ; the final title is To See the Future and will be interpreted by Tomori Kusunoki .
The anime series, which comprises 12 and 13 episodes, respectively, was broadcast in Japan between April 8 and June 30, 2018 on MBS , TV Aichi , Tokyo MX , Tochigi TV , Gunma TV and BS11 . The series will be released in six DVDs with two episodes each. Aniplex of America secured the rights to broadcast in the English-speaking area and simulcasts the series on Crunchyroll and Hulu . In German-speaking countries , the series is streamed online on Wakanim in the OmU . The German dubbing of the first two episodes was first released on Animax on March 21, 2019 , with a new episode every following week. The first volume of the series (episode 1 to 5.5) is planned for April 26, 2019 and the second volume (episode 6 to 12) for June 28, 2019 on DVD and Blu-ray at Peppermint Anime .
