history
The synagogue was built around 1290 and is one of the oldest preserved synagogue buildings in Europe. An inscription names a David b. Israel as the donor of the portal stones . After the pogroms of 1308/09 and 1338 no more Jews lived in Rouffach. The synagogue building underwent major changes in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was used as a wine press for a long time and then converted into a residential building.
