Tadeusz Buk

Tadeusz Jan Buk (born December 15, 1960 in Mójcza in the urban and rural community of Daleszyce in the Holy Cross Voivodeship ; † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish division general . Since September 2009 he was in command of the Polish Army .

Life

In 1984, Buk finished the Officers' College of the Armored Forces (Wyższa Szkoła Oficerska Wojsk Pancernych) in Poznan and began his service as a tank platoon leader in the 29th Panzer Regiment (29 Pułk Czołgów Średnich ) in Żagań . He stayed in this unit for seven years. In 1991 he began studying at the Faculty of Ground Forces ( Wydział Wojsk Lądowych) of the Academy of National Defense (Akademia Obrony Narodowej) in Warsaw . In the years 1993-1995 he served, among others, in the 18th landing assault battalion (Batalion 18 Desantowo-Szturmowy) and in the sixth landing assault brigade (6 Brygada Desantowo-Szturmowa) . From 1995 to 1998 Buk served in the 25th Brigade of the Air Cavalry (25 Brygada Kawalerii Powietrznej) in Tomaszów Mazowiecki . After completing a one-year postgraduate course as staff commander in the USA, he was finally appointed deputy commander of this unit in 1999. From 2002 to 2005 he was the commander of the 34th Brigade of the Armored Cavalry (34 Brygada Kawalerii Pancernej) in Żagań. On August 15, 2004, he was promoted to brigadier general. From 2004 to 2005, Buk was deputy commander of the Multinational Division Central-South in Iraq and then until 2006 deputy director of the NATO headquarters Joint Force Training Center in Bydgoszcz . From 2006 to 2007 he served as a deputy commander in the Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan , CSTC-A for short (in German : Transition Command United Security ), a united staff, where he was responsible for building the Afghan security system. On June 15, 2007, Buk took over the post of commander of the 1st Warsaw Automated Division (1 Warszawska Dywizja Zmechanizowana) . Almost four weeks later he was promoted to division general on July 10, 2007 , and two weeks later, on July 25, 2007, he became commander of the multinational division Multinational Division Central-South in Iraq. On September 15, 2009, Buk was appointed by President Lech Kaczyński to the post of Commander of the Polish Land Forces .

On April 10, 2010, Tadeusz Buk was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński , who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland.

On April 16, 2010, Buk was posthumously promoted to lieutenant general (Generał broni) and one day later, on April 17, 2010, he was buried in the municipal cemetery in Spała in the Powiat Tomaszowski in the Łódź Voivodeship .
