Diary of a chambermaid (original title: Journal d'une femme de chambre ) is a French-Belgian historical film from 2015 by Benoît Jacquot . The film is based on Octave Mirbeau's 1900 novel of the same name and premiered on February 7, 2015 in the Berlinale competition .

action

France around 1900. The self-confident maid Célestine receives a job in Normandy. In the Lanlaires' house, she meets the tyrannical landlady, Madame Lanlaire, and Monsieur Lanlaire, an incorrigible lecher. While Célestine quickly made friends with the cook Marianne and the women in the neighborhood, the gardener Joseph was initially closed to her. When he opens up to her, she learns that he is distributing anti-Semitic pamphlets and that he would like to build a new life in Cherbourg with his savings. He offers her to accompany him as his wife. After some consideration, Célestine agrees. During the night they steal the owner's silver and report the incident the next morning. The police find no evidence and suspect that the perpetrators were professional criminals from Paris. After a few months, Joseph resigned after 15 years of service and asked Célestine to quit if he gave her a sign. In the last scene, Célestine and Joseph drive into a future together.

background

On February 9, 2013 it was announced that Jacquot would realize a remake of the novel with a budget of 6.5 million euros. A few days later, Marion Cotillard was in the process of taking on the role of Celestine, but she later canceled her due to scheduling problems. On February 5, 2014, Jacquot confirmed in an interview that filming would begin next summer with the actors Léa Seydoux and Vincent Lindon in the leading roles. Filming began on June 10 and ended on July 30, 2014. The film was shot in northern France on the historic Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme railway , in Le Crotoy , Berck and in the Paris area .

Kristina Larsen produced the film for Les Films du Lendemain and Jean-Pierre Guérin for JPG Films . The film was co-produced by France 3 Cinéma , Mars Films and the Belgian equipment company Films du Fleuve , owned by the Dardenne brothers. On April 10, 2014, Cineuropa reported that the Île-de-France Region Support Fund would support the film with 440,000 euros.

reception

The film data sheet of the Berlinale states that, following Jean Renoir (1946) and Luis Buñuel ( 1964 ), Jacquot also used the material by Octave Mirbeau “to cast a mocking look at the bourgeoisie”. From the perspective of a young woman “who uses her sensuality to lead a life according to her ideas”, Jacquot reflects “on the power of the apparently powerless and the powerlessness of the supposedly powerful”. In the figure of the house servant Joseph "the abysses of the early 20th century appear, but also the uncertainties of our present".

In the film review of the RBB , however, it is said that the film is an "unimaginative adaptation" that Léa Seydoux could not save alone. There are "only a few sustainable settings and certainly no lasting dialogues", and Jacquot does not succeed in "condensing his plot into a stringent narrative". Only the portrayal of Léa Seydoux was emphasized. The Tagesspiegel drew a comparison with the previous film adaptations and stated that the “new film immediately found its hold in Seydoux's face”. It does not seem "ladylike like Paulette Goddard with Renoir, on the contrary, there is a little coarseness in it" and "a slight defiance" which "immediately certifies this Celestine in her position in life as a staff and at the same time raises her above it".

Awards

In addition to being invited to the 2015 Berlinale competition for the Golden Bear , three nominations for the French César film award (best adapted screenplay, best production design, best costumes) followed.
