Old and new town of Tangier

The Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region ( Arabic طنجة - تطوان - الحسيمة) is the northernmost of the 12 regions in Morocco that were newly created after an administrative reform in 2015 . The name of the region is derived from the three big cities Tangier , Tétouan and Al Hoceïma , which - apart from Tanger's international status - belonged to the Spanish sphere of influence in Morocco from 1912 to 1956 . The capital of the region is the city of Tangier.

geography

The Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region is geographically and climatically shaped by the coasts of the northern Atlantic on the one hand and the Mediterranean on the other, behind which the Rif Mountains rise to an altitude of approximately 2450 m ( Jbel Tidirhine ). There are numerous beaches at Larache and Asilah on the Atlantic or at Belyounech , Restinga-Smir , Oued-Laou and Martil on the Mediterranean. The climate is rather moderate for Moroccan conditions; the annual rainfall mostly corresponds to that in Central Europe, whereby the area around Al Hoceïma is already significantly less rainy.

population

In the entire Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, around 3.556 million people of Arab and Berber descent live in an area of around 16,000 km². Approx. 1.415 million people live in rural areas ( communes rurales ), approx. 2.151 million people live in cities ( municipalités ).

Provinces

The region consists of the following prefectures and provinces, whose capitals often have the same name:
