The Tartar , in German also Terter ( Armenian Թարթառ , Azerbaijani Tərtərçay , sometimes just Tərtər ), is a 184 km long right tributary of the Kura , the largest river in the Caucasus . It rises in the mountains of Nagorno-Karabakh . From there it flows mainly eastwards, where it runs along the southern flank of the Murovdağ mountain range. The Tartar is dammed up to the Sarsang reservoir by a dam built in 1976 . Eventually the river reaches the Kura-Aras-Low , where it flows into the Kura. The Tartar has a right (Azerbaijani Turağayçay ) and two left (Azerbaijani Levçay, Ağdabançay ) larger tributaries.
From a political point of view, the upper and middle reaches of the Tartar are de facto in the provinces of Shahumyan and Martakert of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh . In contrast, de jure the entire river (de facto only the lower reaches) is in the territory of Azerbaijan , where it flows through the rayons (districts) Kəlbəcər , Ağdam , Bərdə and Tərtər .
