Eat or die is a television film from the crime series Tatort . It is the 15th case for the Lucerne commissioner Flückiger as the main investigator and the 14th together with Ritschard. It premiered on December 30, 2018 on SRF 1 and Erste .

action

The economics professor Meili from the University of Lucerne is murdered with several stitches in her apartment. The investigation leads the Commissioners Flückiger and Ritschard to the Swiss entrepreneur Anton Seematter, the CEO of Swisscoal . When they want to question Seematter in his private property, they get caught in a hostage situation. The hostage-taker is the German Mike Liebknecht, who was recently fired from his employer in Bremerhaven. The company belongs to Seematter, the termination is in connection with cost-cutting measures, as part of which jobs are being relocated to Asia. Liebknecht, who is in his late 40s and the divorced father of one child, demands that Seematter surrender his wages as compensation, which he would have earned if he had not been given notice by the time he retired in almost 20 years. He takes Flückiger and Ritschard, like Seematter's wife Sofia and drug addict daughter Leonie, hostage in the villa.

When the commissioners refuse to tell the armed Liebknecht the reason for their presence, Liebknecht shoots Flückiger in the leg. Afterwards Liebknecht learns from the hostages that Meili was Leonie's lecturer. Anton Seematter had donated a 6-digit sum in Swiss francs to the faculty, but Meili transferred it back. The hostages therefore suspect that Anton Seematter had an affair with Meili and paid her hush money. Angry and bitter about this, Sofia willingly promises the hostage-taker to help him blackmail her husband. After Liebknecht has freed the woman for this reason, she lures him into a trap in the house, but Liebknecht does not feel into it, instead he knocks the woman unconscious. Ritschard is able to escape from the property and call in police reinforcements, while Flückiger and Leonie are locked in the small room in which the control of the alarm system for the villa is located. Meanwhile, Anton Seematter tries unsuccessfully in another room to shoot Liebknecht with an assault rifle . They fight against each other to the point of exhaustion, begin to speak on terms and then drink beer together.

When a special police unit ended the hostage-taking in the villa, Sofia who had just woken up shot her husband - unnoticed by the police - and seriously injured Liebknecht in the stomach. Liebknecht flees with Flückiger and Leonie as hostages in a company car. On the way he releases Leonie, who is picked up by Ritschard shortly afterwards. Leonie had killed the hated Meili under the influence of drugs, because she felt too badly rated by her during her studies. Before Liebknecht succumbs to his injury in the car, Flückiger enables him to call his son farewell. Finally, Ritschard indirectly informs Sofia Seematter that she suspects her to have committed the murders of her husband and Liebknecht.

Reviews

At Zeit online , Matthias Dell was impressed by the film and called it "a stimulating game with the set pieces of the genre film over long stretches", the "initially confusing threads of the plot" soon came together "into a thoroughly comical chamber play". The part of the film in which the commissioners arrive at the location of the hostage-taking is "undoubtedly the most exciting part of the film", since the director "plays through the experimental arrangement from the book with wit and a sense of rhythm".

In the NZZ , Daniele Muscionico felt it was a serious deficit that the film did not allow the actors of the two inspectors by far enough to show off their acting talent, and the ending that was “free of surprises and realistic”, the “final punch line”, was missing.

With a rating of 3 out of 10 possible points, Christian Buß gave himself a negative opinion at Spiegel online : The film was "capitalism-critical chaos" and seemed "overstimulated and overdrawn". On the other hand, the verdict of the film service fell with 4 out of 5 possible points : The film “with the help of grandiose guest actors for a thrilling exchange of blows”, whereby “criticism of the reckless behavior of the super-rich” is conveyed clearly and “without intrusive gestures”.

Eat or die is a strong intimate play, [...]. Episode 15 from Lucerne [...] manages the balancing act between cynicism and humanity. This thriller has a lot to offer: from an extensive duel to fraternization to the poetry of falling snow, there is a lot involved. "
