The beautiful Schein is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The film with Eva Mattes as chief detective Klara Blum was produced by SWR and SRF and first broadcast in Germany on January 16, 2011. This 788th episode in the crime scene series is the 19th case of Klara Blum and the 15th case of Kai Perlmann . Reto Flückiger , the Swiss colleague, is investigating with this team for the third and last time.

The visitor Bonnie Marquardt is found dead in the Kreuzlingen planetarium. Since it is a German from Konstanz, Reto Flückiger from the Thurgau canton police turns to Klara Blum, with whom he has already worked successfully twice. Strangely enough, a goldfish is found in the victim's throat, but she did not choke on it. She is the owner of a beauty clinic in Kreuzlingen, where her husband also works as an anesthetist. Blum and Flückiger want to deliver the news of his death to him personally and drive to the clinic on Lake Constance. However, he is at a conference in the Black Forest. So first talk to Dr. Holger Rickert and his wife Gloria, who built the clinic together with the Marquardts. Due to the sizeable fortune and the fact that Bonnie Marquardt was about to file for divorce, the husband comes under suspicion. His alibi is shaky because it can be proven that he was not at the conference and did not give any lectures.
Perlmann has now researched that clinic bills for breast implants lead to a front company, so that a motive for the crime can also be suspected here. To find out more, Blum smuggles her colleague with alleged burnout as a patient in the private clinic. During the tour with Gloria Rickert, Perlmann is shown through all treatment rooms. Including a room with a Feng Shui aquarium, in which eight goldfish are supposed to swim, as a symbol of wealth and balance. Perlmann can only count seven fish. He also notices differences between Peter Marquardt and the employee Susi Buck, who is obviously blackmailing him. At night he secretly manages to look at old surgical documents, according to which a patient suffered irreversible brain damage three years ago during a rhinoplasty. Due to a falsified anesthesia report, the clinic could not be held legally responsible, and the mother's lawsuit was unsuccessful.
Blum finds out that Bonnie Marquardt was looking for a new head physician to replace Rickert after she discovered that Rickert had bought cheap breast implants in recent years and resold them through his front company as supposedly high-quality goods. Overall, the relationship between the Rickerts and the Marquardts is extremely tense. In the dispute, Holger Rickert confesses to his wife that he had a relationship with Bonnie, which Peter Marquardt already knew about.
Shortly afterwards, Holger Rickert is found hanging on the mast of his yacht. As with the goldfish, Blum suspects that there is a message from the murderer. So Peter Marquardt remains as the sole suspect and Blum instructs Perlmann to give up his cover and protect Gloria Rickert, who is very likely in danger. When he is about to see her, he learns from a neighbor that she recently drove away with someone.
Blum is concerned with the murder motive, and so she seeks out Marili Rottacher, who has been in a vegetative state since the anesthetic accident and lives in a nursing home. There she finds out that the girl's father is called Robert Zöllner and works as a caretaker in the clinic. While Blum and Flückiger are looking for him, Peter Marquardt is found dead on the golf course. Zöllner kidnaps his daughter from the nursing home and has Gloria Rickert tied up in the trunk of his car. He brings them both to his boat and takes them to Lake Constance. He wants Gloria Rickert to die with him and his daughter. However, Blum and Flückiger are on his trail and search Lake Constance for the boat. When they find it and want to arrest Flückiger customs officer, he falls overboard and does not appear again.

The shooting of this crime scene crime thriller, produced by Südwestrundfunk and Swiss Radio and Television in cooperation with Maran Film , took place in Konstanz , Baden-Baden , Kreuzlingen, Romanshorn and the island of Reichenau under the working title Zum dying beautiful or Who wants to be beautiful must die instead. Klara Blum investigates one last time together with Reto Flückiger, her colleague from Switzerland, who started his own crime scene from Lucerne in 2011.

Ulrike Klode from Stern.de judges the crime writers of this episode: “With Der Schöne Schein, they present an exciting crime novel. In the beginning there is a murder, there are three suspects with motives that are familiar from the classics: revenge, greed, jealousy. In addition, a dark secret and commissioners who investigate and combine. And at the end there is the surprising twist. [...] The figure of the murderer has been introduced for a long time and naturally without the viewer becoming suspicious. "
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv criticizes the film as follows: “Neither the motive of administrative assistance, the“ relationship ”between the inspectors, nor the incognito investigation or Lake Constance as the final location are exhausted. So this crime scene remains stuck in mediocrity: a script in which a lot is based on intuition and chance, which comes up with murder puzzles ("The fish stinks from the head") and artificially staged showdown, instead of precise tension dramaturgy. The crime scene The beautiful appearance is judged by Swantje Karich at FAZ.net as quite average and the critic sees this crime scene as a somewhat "exaggerated world of the clinically beautiful" in which "is continuously murdered" and "memories of Swedish thrillers" awaken become. In this episode, Klara Blum considers her to be the “weak point in this otherwise gripping crime scene, well staged by René Heisig ”.
Joachim Hirzel from Focus.de assesses the film as positive, because “The successful Bodensee crime thriller takes place in a clinic for the perfect optics, in which the most unsightly, human abysses open up [...] Director René Heisig has the story well and excitingly staged. We have long suspected Bonnie's murderer to be among her loved ones. The film reveals the Marili episode only late - and very elegantly via a cuddly toy. That is done imaginatively. Even if, there must be so much criticism, the search trip on Lake Constance ended up being much too long (breathless). But there is something about this crime scene that comforts it.
