The Thuringian Mill Cycle Path runs through the wooded and scenic region of the Thuringian Woodland . Forestry and wood processing formed the livelihood of the population. In the narrow river valleys, idyllic grinding and sawmills have been preserved up to the present day. As early as the 1920s, this area was made accessible by nature, hiking and local communities. Small pensions and inns were built in the mills that had already been closed, the buildings were preserved.

Coming from Jena, the cycle path leads as a section of the Thuringian chain of cities long- distance cycle path, initially in an easterly direction to Stadtroda , uses the Zeitzgrund to Hermsdorf and follows the Eisenberg Mühltal to the district town of Eisenberg (Thuringia) . The way back to Jena takes place via a northern parallel path via Bürgel and the Gleistal . The bike path has a total length of 80 kilometers, 55 kilometers of which are paved and 25 kilometers are on field and forest paths. The path runs largely without steep sections at heights between 126 and 360 m above sea level (only a short, steep section of the forest path has to be passed west of Eisenberg).

Jena, Zöllnitz , Laasdorf , Gernewitz , Stadtroda , Schleifreisen , Hermsdorf , Bad Klosterlausnitz , Weißenborn , Kursdorf , Eisenberg , Bürgel , Graitschen , Löberschütz , Golmsdorf and Porstendorf near Jena are named as stage locations.

Connection

The Thuringian mill cycle path is connected to the cycle path network of the city of Jena. There are connections to the Saale cycle path and the Thuringian city chain long-distance cycle path. Between Thalbürgel (Bürgel) and Jena-Ost, the church cycle path Jena - Thalbürgel offers the possibility of an alternative thematic route - interesting village churches were selected as stage destinations. From Jena, the Napoleon Cycle Path 1806 is also an extension in the direction of Apolda . Links to the regional rail network of Deutsche Bahn were also taken into account in the routing.
