The Thames River [ tɛmz ] ( French Rivière Thames ) is a 260 km long river in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario .

It rises about 80 km northeast of the city of London and flows from there in a south-westerly direction for another 120 km before flowing into Lake St. Clair near Chatham at Lighthouse Cove .

The river was named after the Thames in England.

Description of the course of the river

In London , two smaller rivers meet at the Forks of the Thames , both of which are known as the Thames River . The two rivers are also known as the North Thames River and South Thames River , and Thames River (North Branch) and Thames River (South Branch) , respectively .

The South Thames River - which is regarded as the main river - rises east of Tavistock and flows first south to the town of Woodstock and from there in a wide and flat valley in a westerly direction to Ingersoll and on to London. In between, the smaller Middle Thames River flows in from the north .

The North Thames River rises north of the parish of Mitchell, flows south through the small town of St. Marys and on to London. A left tributary is the Avon River coming from Stratford . The Medway Creek flows into the North Thames River on the right-hand side in London - shortly before it joins the South Thames River.

From the Forks (of the Thames) , right on the western edge of downtown London, the Thames River flows parallel to the north bank of Lake Erie to the city of Chatham and from there about 30 km to the confluence in Lake St. Clair .

Characteristics of the Thames are a strongly meandering course, a slight gradient in the lower reaches and the withering of the upper reaches to rivulets when water is scarce.

navigability

At the mouth of Lake St. Clair is a historic lighthouse. Upstream, the Thames River is navigable to Chatham. If the water level is sufficient, for example after rainfall, the upper reaches from Woodstock or St. Marys can be canoeed.

Water regulation

The catchment area of the Thames was covered with deciduous forest until the European settlement phase, which spread over the moist clay soil. Today the catchment area is considered to be one of the most intensively used agricultural areas in Ontario , with mostly drained arable land. In order to alleviate the insufficient water storage capacity of these cultivated soils, three larger dams were built on the upper reaches, among other things . This is the Pittock Dam , Wildwood Dam, and Fanshawe Dam .

particularities

In the immediate vicinity of the banks of the Thames, at the level of the city of Ingersoll , a supraregional waste dump is planned (status: 2014). This is to become the fourth largest landfill in Canada, with a capacity of 0.85 million tons of garbage per year.
