action

Dave and Aubrey meet outside of a party on a Friday night. He asks her to help him end up with his friend Jane. Before the police arrive, they leave the party together and run to her home. When they arrive there, she invites him over. In her room, Aubrey asks him if he has had sex , which he denies. When he asks her the same question, she refuses to answer it. After their conversation, the two fall asleep together. The next morning, after they both woke up, Dave disappears through the window.

The next day, Dave meets with his two friends Simon and Big Corporation and tells them about Aubrey. However, they believe that Aubrey lied to Dave about her boyfriend. You convince him that he should write to her. Since Dave doesn't know Aubrey's number, they call a guy who has access to Aubrey's high school records and get her landline number . When Dave calls Aubrey and asks about her plans for the evening, she tells him that she is going to the movies with her boyfriend Ronny. Dave replies that he's going to the movies with some friends too.

At the cinema, Dave meets Jane and her two friends Brianna and Erica and decides to watch a movie with them. Shortly thereafter, Aubrey shows up and introduces Dave to her boyfriend Ronny. The two go in the same movie as Dave and Jane. In the middle of the performance, Aubrey leaves the cinema, whereupon Dave follows her. In the lobby, she apologizes to him for her rude behavior on the phone and for Dave jumping off the roof of her garage that morning. He accepts her apology and finally gets her number. He invites her and Ronny to join Jane's friend Brianna. Then Aubrey goes back to the cinema to see the film to the end.

At Brianna's home, Aubrey and Jane have a conversation in which Jane refers to Dave as her best male friend who has helped her with all of her bad relationships. Aubrey tries to suggest that she go out with Dave, but stops in mid-sentence. Meanwhile, Ronny tells Dave that after a long wait, he will finally have sex with Aubrey in his van tonight. Dave advises Aubrey not to lose her virginity to Ronny because he is not right for her. Aubrey replies that there is no right one for her and that she just wants to get it over with. Dave doesn't believe her and claims that she would like him. Shortly afterwards there is almost a kiss between the two, which is however disturbed by Ronny. He wants to disappear immediately and starts a little fight with Dave out of anger. Afterwards, Aubrey leaves the house with Ronny.

Dave is then alone with Jane, and while tending to his wound from fighting Ronny, Jane starts talking about their relationships. Because of his budding feelings for Aubrey and because Dave and Jane only talk about her when they talk, he leaves her. On the drive home, Aubrey asks him to pick her up. On her drive through town she tells him that she broke up with Ronny, whereupon the two kiss.

The next evening, Aubrey invites Dave over after her parents go out. Shortly after he gets there, the two kiss and begin to undress. But Dave stops and declares the past weekend for the best of his life and that he doesn't want to ruin it. Although they may initially think it's best for the relationship not to have sex, they still sleep together. However, the sex didn't go as smoothly and as nicely as they imagined, which confuses both of them in their relationship. Dave leaves Aubrey's house and seeks help from Simon and Big Corporation. While Simon advises him to forget about Aubrey, Big Corporation tells him to be a man and not let a little hurdle hold him back.

The next morning, Dave stands in front of Aubrey's house and tells her that he wants to have a relationship with her, despite the last night. He then drives her to school and, although she hates showing affection in public, she kisses him.

reception

The film received mixed reviews, with a 47 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 17 reviews. Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times wrote that "There was so much to love about The First Time , the shallow innuendos, the unprejudiced emotional open-mindedness," but the film "still doesn't really ignite." The top video review of the Children's and Youth Film Center says: “In carefully composed cinema images, the sensitive comedy captivates with its wonderful leading actors. Dylan O'Brien […] is allowed to portray a boy beyond the clichés. Brittany Robertson gives her Aubrey fragile depth. The first time sex is not presented here exaggerated, but as what it usually is: an awkward attempt, coupled with a great longing for love and understanding. A thoroughly lovable and worth seeing youth film, with long dialogue passages that are never boring, but always pointed and close to life. "
