action

Two couples rented a house on the Oregon coast online to spend the weekend together and celebrate that Charlie and Mina had the seed money for their joint business idea. So you don't mind that the house with its own jacuzzi is a little more expensive. The fact that Mina's husband Josh brings his French bulldog Reggie with him is not only against the house rules, which don't allow dogs, but also causes Charlie's annoyance.

After a night and a lot of drugs, the initially good mood changes. Shortly afterwards, Mina finds a tiny camera in a shower head. They discover cameras hidden all over the house but do not know who is watching them.

production

It is in The Rental to the directorial debut of Dave Franco , who together with Joe Swanberg also wrote the screenplay. Commenting on the idea for the film, Franco said, “The story was inspired by my own paranoia about the concept of home sharing . The country is more divided than ever and nobody trusts each other, but it's perfectly fine to stay with a stranger just because there are some positive reviews online. ”Still, Franco regularly uses and had home sharing apps himself Found accommodation on Airbnb during The Rental's production . About his fears that third parties could find out private things about him without his knowledge, Franco explained that when he was on the phone with people from his family or with close friends, for example, he always had in the back of his mind whether someone might be having this conversation listens. Much in The Rental is due to his thoughts of this kind.

Franco wanted not only to make a thriller and horror film, but also to create a relationship drama in which the interpersonal problems between the characters also play a role. As influences on his directorial debut, he names horror film classics such as The Shining , Rosemary's Baby , The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Halloween . Franco took over a few things from newer films like Hereditary by Ari Aster , Blue Ruin by Jeremy Saulnier , Martha Marcy May Marlene by Sean Durkin , Goodnight Mommy by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz , It Follows by David Robert Mitchell and The Babadook by Jennifer Kent , as he love these young filmmakers in the genre and they didn't neglect the actors, visuals, music or production design.

The film was shot in the coastal town of Bandon, Oregon

Franco, who does not play himself, starred Michelle with his wife Alison Brie . Dan Stevens plays her husband Charlie. Sheila Vand and Jeremy Allen White play Mina and Josh, the couple they are friends with. Toby Huss plays Taylor, the manager of the vacation home.

The filming took place in the spring of 2019 in the coastal town of Bandon , Oregon . Christian Sprenger acted as cameraman .

The film music was composed by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans . The soundtrack album with eleven pieces of music was released for US theatrical release by Lakeshore Records as a download.

Reviews

The film is rated positively by 75 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics. The successful balance between a relationship drama, in which the trust between friends increasingly begins to crumble, and the sudden change into a slasher film was repeatedly highlighted positively, a handle in which Dave Franco surprisingly effortlessly mixes the two genres and the shouldn't work, but it still does. The premise of building the film on the dangers associated with booking via Airbnb was also described by critics as simple but imaginative. The feeling of fear the film evokes is based on a real trend that will lead viewers to think twice about continuing to book their accommodation through Airbnb. SlashFilm's Chris Evangelista thinks the relationship issues worked better than the horror elements.

Gross profit

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film grossed around 1.2 million US dollars worldwide.
