action

Nancy Adams travels to surf a hidden beach in Mexico, which her late mother once visited when she was pregnant with Nancy. Carlos, a local, drops her on the beach. First, Nancy surfs with two other men who leave the water a little later. Nancy takes a break and video chat with her sister Chloe and her father. The conversation shows that she dropped out of medical school due to the death of her mother.

When Nancy swims out with her surfboard one more time, she discovers the huge carcass of a humpback whale . A short time later, a great white shark knocked her off the surfboard, pulled her underwater and left a deep bite wound in her thigh. Nancy rescues herself on the whale carcass, which is knocked over by the shark shortly afterwards, forcing Nancy to swim to a rock protruding from the water. Since she is losing a lot of blood, Nancy decides to sew up her wound herself using only her earrings and necklace. The other two surfers leave the beach without noticing Nancy's calls for help. She spends the night on the rock. You will keep a wounded and therefore flightless seagull company. She calls this Steven Seagull - a game with the English word Seagull for seagull and the name of the actor Steven Seagal .

The next day, Nancy is noticed by a drunken local. But he only wants to steal her things lying on the beach. When he tries to get the surfboard floating in the water and ignores Nancy's warnings, he is attacked and killed by the shark. A few hours later, the two surfers from the previous day arrive, who are also killed by the shark. Nancy manages to fish the GoPro helmet camera out of the water from one of the surfers, on which she leaves a message for her family.

When the tide hits, Nancy realizes that the water will soon wash over the rock. She places the seagull on a piece of the surfboard and pushes it towards the coast. While the shark is distracted by jellyfish , it swims to a nearby buoy, which it reaches just before the predatory fish. Here she finds a signal pistol with which she fires a shot to attract the attention of a distant ship. Your distress signal is not noticed. The shark approaches the buoy. Nancy shoots the animal with a signal cartridge, which does not prevent it from attacking the buoy. In the process, the chains with which the buoy is anchored to the seabed break gradually. Nancy clings to the last remaining chain. When it tears, it is pulled to the sea floor with great speed while the shark follows it. At the last moment, Nancy lets go of the chain and turns off. The shark is impaled on the anchoring poles of the buoy. Nancy disappears in a dark cloud several meters below the surface of the water, her fate initially remains unclear.

A local boy finds the helmet camera on the beach. He takes her to his father, who turns out to be Carlos. Carlos finds Nancy floating lifeless in the water and manages to revive her. Steven Seagull has also reached the beach.

A year later: Nancy has successfully completed her medical degree and is spending a surfing vacation in Galveston with her sister Chloe and her father . Her father tells her that her mother would be proud of her. Chloe asks if she'll ever be as good as Nancy, and Nancy jokes that she certainly won't.

reception

The Shallows received mixed, but mostly positive, reviews.

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts criticized the confusing time indications and countdowns in the film, but in the end he judged it positively as: "Simple, but effective survival ripper with an excellent leading actress."

Tobias Heidemann's opinion on Giga.de was rather ambivalent and awarded 6 out of 10 points: “He is not the hoped-for reanimation of a genre that has degenerated into a farce. A gripping survival thriller with a brilliantly acting leading actress, unfortunately, isn't either. Nevertheless, the slowly increasing tension curve and the unpredictably placed moments of shock justify a visit to the cinema. But only if you have a heart for (noble) trash and the trailer has not yet seen. 'The Shallows' has nothing more to offer than what is shown there! Apart from the ridiculously exaggerated mini-final. "

The film received 3 out of 5 points on Moviejones.de . Jaume Collet-Serra is criticized for relying too much on the leading actress instead of relying on a good script, but The Shallows is always "cinema fun in its dimensions".

On Rotten Tomatoes , the horror movie scored 78% on the tomatometer and received an average rating of 3.4 out of 5 from the audience.
