action
production
In 2011 Giancarlo Esposito mentioned his preparatory work on the film. For Esposito, who is known for his portrayal of Gustavo Fring in the television series Breaking Bad , The Show is the second production he was involved in as a director after Gospel Hill (2008). Filming took place in and around Vancouver from November to December 2015 .
The film premiered on March 11, 2017 under the title This Is Your Death at the South by Southwest Film Festival. From September 15, 2017, the film was shown in the United States under the title The Show, limited in selected cinemas. The German premiere took place on September 8, 2017 at the Fantasy Filmfest .
reception
criticism
Peter Debruge from Variety sees Espositos's attempt to make a television film that is critical of television as a failure. For him, the characters are written one-dimensional and mostly played flat. In many places he judged the script to be overly direct. Debruge sees the theme of the film in many earlier works such as Series 7: Are You Ready? or Running Man better implemented. Debruge sees The Show as far removed from the quality of Paddy Chayefsky's film satire network . The play on words of the original title This Is Your Death with the reality format This Is Your Life from the 1950s, staged with a lot of respect for the participant, strikes him positively.
Awards
At the Leo Awards 2017, the film was nominated for best sound, best editing and best camera. Sarah Wayne Callies also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
