Julian Fernando Casablancas (born August 23, 1978 in New York ) is an American singer and songwriter . He became known as the lead singer of the band The Strokes .

Life

Julian's father, John Casablancas, is a Spanish immigrant who started an international modeling agency. His mother Jeanette Christiansen is a Danish model. When he was nine years old, his parents divorced and he was raised with his mother.

Up to the age of 14 he attended the French Lycée Français in New York. When he was caught drunk, his father sent him to the renowned Le Rosey boarding school in Switzerland for half a year . Eventually he attended the Dwight School in Manhattan through eleventh grade. During this time, at three different schools, he got to know the later Strokes members.

Casablancas graduated from Five Towns College with a degree in classical composition before forming the band The Strokes with Nikolai Fraiture, Albert Hammond Jr. , Fabrizio Moretti and Nick Valensi in 1999 , of which he is the sole lead singer to this day. He was the sole songwriter until the 2011 album Angles , where he completely withdrew from the writing process and only sang his vocal parts in the studio. Together, the five musicians released four studio albums by 2011, each of which enjoyed great commercial success.

In addition to the band, the members also repeatedly worked on solo projects or projects with other bands. For example, Casablancas played with the Queens of the Stone Age , Santigold and Pharrell , Danger Mouse , The Lonely Island and Sparklehorse . In 2008 Casablancas began preparations for a solo album, which was released in November 2009 and is entitled Phrazes for the Young . The 2013 released album Random Access Memories of Daft Punk includes a collaboration with Julian Casablancas.

In 2013 Casablancas founded the side project Julian Casablancas + The Voidz together with Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter, Amir Yaghmai, Jacob "Jake" Bercovici, Alex Carapetis and Jeff Kite. Tyranny, the band's debut album, was released in late September 2014.

Casablancas has been married to Juliet Joslin since 2005 and they have two sons.
