Is This It is the debut album by the American rock band The Strokes . It was first released on July 30, 2001 and received positive reviews, and it is now one of the most important albums in contemporary rock music .

Emergence

Guitarist Nick Valensi met Julian Casablancas during his time at New York's Dwight School. During their school days, both made friends with the drummer Fabrizio Moretti and the bassist Nikolai Fraiture, the last member followed in 1998 by the guitarist Albert Hammond junior , son of the musician Albert Hammond . In the fall of 2000, a demo recording of their first songs fell into the hands of booker Ryan Gentles, who signed them for four performances in December. These appearances left a lasting impression; Ryan Gentles quit his old job and became the manager of the Strokes. In March 2001, shortly after the release of their debut EP The Modern Age , he helped them sign a record deal with RCA Records . In the following weeks, The Strokes recorded the album Is This It .

Already on Is This It you can hear influences from The Velvet Underground , which Julian Casablancas later called one of his favorite bands, and the Ramones .

The Allmusic Guide saw the origins of the Strokes in punk-influenced New York in the late 1970s:

"On the Modern Age EP, singles like Hard to Explain , and their full-length debut, Is This It , the NYC group presents a pop-inflected, second-generation take on late-'70s New York punk, complete with raw, world-weary vocals, spiky guitars, and an insistently chugging backbeat. "

“On Modern Age EP, singles like Hard to Explain, and their debut album Is This It , the New York group presents a pop-inspired, late-breaking recourse to New York punk of the late 1970s, complete with raw, life-weary vocals, pointy Guitars and a persistently chugging rhythm. "

As an album that revived the garage rock and post-punk of the 1970s, Is This It is also considered to be an essential template for later successful bands such as the Arctic Monkeys :

"Without strokes there would be no libertines , no Franz Ferdinand , no Kings of Leon , no Arctic Monkeys."

The album reached number 33 in the Billboard charts and number 28 in the German charts. In Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and Australia it reached the top 5 of the national charts. The album received four out of five points in Rolling Stone , and the Allmusic Guide selected it as the AMG Album Pick .

The New Musical Express voted Is This It # 4 of the 500 best albums of all time and # 1 of the 100 best albums of the 2000s. The song Hard to Explain is # 3 of the 100 best songs of the decade.

Rolling Stone magazine ranks it # 199 out of the 500 best albums of all time and # 2 in the 100 best albums of the 2000s.

In the selection of the 200 best albums of the decade from Pitchfork Media has Is This It Place 7. The song Someday reached number 53 of the 200 best songs of the decade. Spin magazine chose Is This It as # 18 of the 125 best albums from 1987–2012. The album was voted one of the 150 records for the ages by readers of Visions magazine in 2006.

Is This It is one of the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die .
