action

The fictional King County's deputy sheriff , Rick Grimes, is seriously injured on the job and falls into a coma for weeks . When he wakes up, he is in a deserted, devastated hospital with countless corpses scattered around it . Rick realizes with horror that some of them seem to be alive despite the most severe mutilation and decay that has long since begun . Rick makes his way to his house, but there is no trace of his wife Lori and 12-year-old son Carl. On the street in front of his house, Rick is found by two survivors, Morgan and his son Duane, and taken into their hiding place. From them Rick learns that some time ago the city was overrun by bloodthirsty zombies without any warning and that the people who could not save themselves in time perished and became zombies themselves. The cause is suspected to be a disease that people infected with . The entire information network has collapsed, there are no more political or military structures and the few surviving people are left to fend for themselves. After their transformation, the zombies usually wander aimlessly through the area and - attracted by smells , noises or warmth - fall on everything living they come across and tear it to pieces with their bare teeth. The only way to kill them for good is through targeted brain injury , whether by blunt force, knives, or firearms . Since Rick is convinced that his family will survive, he soon goes in search of her. He enters the Atlanta overrun by zombies unsuspecting and is rescued from his plight by Glenn and his group. In their camp outside of Atlanta, Rick unexpectedly meets his family and police friend and colleague Shane Walsh again. Believing Rick was dead, Lori has meanwhile started a relationship with Shane, of which Rick has no idea at first. Lori abruptly breaks her connection to Shane.

Rick and Shane take over the leadership role among the Atlanta survivors, including the sisters Andrea and Amy, the shy Carol with her violent husband Ed and daughter Sophia, the clumsy T-Dog, the caring widower Dale and the lonely Daryl. Daryl's rebellious, racist brother Merle, who was handcuffed to the roof of a house because of his disrespectful behavior while fleeing Atlanta , disappeared on a subsequent rescue mission - he had severed his hand in desperation in order to free himself. Rick and his companions retrieve Rick's duffel bag full of weapons and return to their camp. While she was away, the camp was overrun by zombies and the group suffered numerous casualties, including Amy and Carol's husband Ed. The surviving group members then decide to break up camp and visit the Atlanta Center for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ), where they can find surviving staff and possibly also the rescue from the apocalypse hope. Some members decide to go their own way and leave the group. At the CDC, the only remaining Dr. Edwin Jenner told the survivors key details about the epidemic and its mode of action in the human brain based on a video recording made during his research. Jenner points out how the disease spreads and ends up killing the host . Only then does it spread to the brain and reactivate the brain stem so that the deceased are resurrected and follow basic instincts such as running and eating. Jenner is convinced that there is no hope of a cure since the networked research centers seem to have been out of operation for weeks. When the CDC's energy resources run low, it initiates its automatic self-destruction and Rick's group is again forced to flee . The survivor Jaqui stays with Dr. Jenner returns with self-determined death and both are killed in the CDC explosion. The last shot shows the column of five vehicles moving away with the remaining survivors.

Rick Grimes, a deputy in the fictional King County , Georgia , is seriously gunshot wounded during a mission and falls into a coma. When he wakes up in a hospital, the world he knew no longer exists. Apparently an apocalypse took place in which the entire environment was overrun and almost completely depopulated by zombies (they are called "strays", "walkers" or "walkers" in the course of the storyline, but never zombies). Rick heads home to find his wife Lori and son Carl, but cannot find them. He later meets two survivors from a neighboring area who inform him about the recent events. He also learns that the federal agency CDC has allegedly set up a quarantine zone in Atlanta, Georgia. The next morning, Rick makes his way to the metropolis, as he suspects his family to be there. While Rick was in a coma, Lori entered into a relationship with his work colleague Shane Walsh and lives with her son and a small group of survivors in a small camp in a rural area. When Rick arrives in Atlanta on horseback, he is attacked by a horde of walkers. In the last resort he escapes into a tank while his horse is eaten by the walkers.

Glenn, a young American of Korean descent, helps Rick by radio instructions to escape from the tank despite the Walkers outside the tank. Both of them flee to a multi-storey department store with five others from Glenn's group who are looting supplies for a camp outside of Atlanta. The careless Rick is received hostile, mutual accusations follow. On the flat roof of the department store, Merle Dixon threatens the other survivors with his gun after a frenzy, is overpowered by Rick and handcuffed to a pipe. Chasing walkers are already breaking into the department store; It is foreseeable that the mass of the undead will soon have smashed the glass of the entrance doors with stones. The group decides to flee with the help of a nearby company car with a box body, as they suspect that the vehicle keys are also present on the company premises. Rick and Glenn put on two coats and rub them with the blood of an undead so that the walking dead will perceive them as their own. On the way to the company premises, rain suddenly sets in, the camouflage loses its effect, but the two get into the vehicle fighting in time. Glenn gets into a Dodge Challenger and lures the creatures away from the store using the theft alarm. During the hasty start from the roof of the department store to the roller shutter in the incoming goods area on the ground floor, T-Dog falls the key for the handcuffs into a rain drainage pipe; then he locks the steel door to the roof with a chain and a lock. Rick drives in front of the roller shutter and the group can leave the department store just before the undead invading. The two vehicles leave Atlanta on a highway.

In the meantime, Rick meets his family and old police colleague Shane Walsh at the survivors' camp. Lori then orders Shane to stay away from her and her son. Among the survivors is Daryl, the brother of Merle, who was left behind on the roof. Rick drives back to Atlanta with Daryl, T-Dog and Glenn to rescue Merle. They also want to get the weapons that Rick had lost on the street when he escaped into the tank. Once there, you can use a bolt cutter to get onto the roof of the department store. They cannot find Merle, however, as Merle has now freed himself from the handcuff by severing his hand with a handsaw from the toolbox that was left behind.

Daryl manages to arrest an attacker, but the others flee in a car with Glenn hostage. After interrogating their own hostage, Rick and the others find out the whereabouts of the attackers and hope to exchange prisoners. They are turned back by the mostly Latino gang, who want the prisoner as well as the bag with the weapons. The impending shooting is halted when an elderly woman (the grandmother of one of the previous attackers) interrupts the confrontation. Rick and his men realize that the gangsters run a nursing home. The gang consists of two former employees of a nursing home that is still home to many residents, as well as the relatives of those in need of care who joined them afterwards. Rick leaves them some of the guns and returns to the van with his group. However, the vehicle has disappeared, and they suspect Merle stole it. Meanwhile, the survivors' camp is attacked by a large group of undead. They fell victim to Andreas younger sister Amy and Carol's husband Ed. When the group decides to leave the premises, assuming they cannot get inside the building, Rick notices that a security camera is moving.
