action

After Negan has captured Rick, Carl, Glenn, Maggie, Daryl, Rosita, Abraham, Eugene, Sasha, Michonne and Aaron in the forest, he first kills Abraham with his baseball bat "Lucille" and then Glenn. Negan asks Rick's group to immediately provide him and his people with whatever they can find. They withdraw, taking Daryl with them as leverage. Rick and the rest of the group head back to Hilltop to have Maggie checked out.

Morgan and Carol are meanwhile in another peaceful community, the so-called "Kingdom", which is led by Ezekiel. There, Carol receives medical attention and is recovering from the injuries inflicted by Negan's men at the end of last season. King Ezekiel lets Morgan in on the secret agreement between the kingdom and the Saviors to provide them with fresh food every week and to live in peace in return. Morgan teaches orphaned teenager Benjamin Aikido after Ezekiel asks him to and begins to settle in the community. However, Carol finds the kingdom and Ezekiel in the role of its king a big joke and wants to leave the community. However, Ezekiel, who was a former zoo keeper and saved the zoo tiger Shiva at the beginning of the apocalypse and continues to keep it as a pet, can persuade her to stay in a house on the edge of the kingdom. Ezekiel visits her regularly, although she makes several clear expressions that she wants to be left alone.

The traumatic experience in the forest not only divides Rick's group physically. Some members move away from each other emotionally because of a general disagreement about how the group should behave from now on: While some want to fight the bondage of the Saviors, Rick is inclined to accept the situation for the time being in order to lose more friends to avoid. When Negan demands his first tribute in Alexandria, he relieves the group of all of their firearms, which makes it easier for them to decide whether to fight or not and for many only increases the feeling of powerlessness and being at the mercy. Rick also has to put up with further humiliations from Negan. In addition, the different processes of coping with the deaths of Glenn and Abraham are illustrated in individual figures. Rick in particular, who until then considered his group to be downright untouchable, has a hard time struggling with the realization that none of them are immortal and that he cannot save everyone. In a conversation with Michonne he tells her that they have to be ready to lose each other in the worst case and still fight on as long as they can in order to achieve a higher goal - rebuilding civilization and thus a life worth living again. For this reason, Rick finally comes up with a plan to retrieve weapons and find allies in the fight against the Saviors. While looking for allies, he met a large group of survivors, among others, who lived in a huge junkyard and had strange manners. Nevertheless, he agrees to a deal with their leader Jadis: Rick equips the group with weapons and leaves them with most of the Saviors' possessions as soon as they are defeated, and for this Jadis fights with her people on Rick's side.

Meanwhile, Daryl is held in a cell by Negan and humiliated. With little food, which he gets from Dwight, as well as constant music and sleep deprivation, his resistance to Negan and the Saviors should be broken. Negan offers Daryl three options: Loyal at his side like Dwight, a farmer in slave status or as undead in the protective wall; he does not want to let him go back to Alexandria. Despite all the hardships, Daryl refuses to be broken, which, despite his annoyance, impresses Negan and motivates him to use more cruel methods.

While in captivity, Daryl is cared for by Dwight. In the course of Dwight's background story and loyalty to Negan, the viewer becomes aware of the fact that he is visibly disgusting: When Daryl first met him, he had stolen drugs from Negan and had fled with his wife Sherry and their sister Tina. After Tina died, the two stole from Daryl and returned to Negan. Dwight apologized to him, but he only accepted his apology on the condition that Sherry was his from now on. As a punishment for the stolen medication and for the escape, Negan Dwight disfigured the left side of his face with a glowing iron. As one of Negan's wives, Sherry has a seemingly carefree life at the top of the Saviors hierarchy, but - like the other women of Negan - he must always be available for sexual favors. She can only talk to Dwight. Fearing for each other's well-being, Sherry and Dwight dare not defy Negan in any way. When Sherry learns that Dwight killed a runaway Savior, she turns away from him, later helps Daryl to escape successfully and flees from Negan's base herself. Dwight follows her to a meeting place previously arranged for this case (their old joint house), but only finds a note from Sherry in which she announces that she no longer trusts him and that she wants to get by on her own.

Maggie and Sasha stay together at Hilltop, where Maggie is under constant medical observation after a serious pregnancy complication. Both women mourn the loss of Abraham and Glenn, who were buried inside Hilltop. They make friends with Jesus and save the church during a night raid initiated by the Saviors as a punishment. Enid joins Maggie and Sasha in Hilltop. Maggie is gradually overtaking the leader of the hilltop community, Gregory, which is apparently going to Negan's base to tell him about Rick's war plans and the survival of Maggie, who Negan believed dead (he had an eye on her). Maggie begins recruiting Hilltop residents to fight Negan and training them in weapons with Sasha and Enid.

Tara is separated from Heath on her two-week errand tour and meets a new group, the Oceans, which consists only of very well trained women. The group is willing to take Tara in until they learn of the confrontation between Tara's group and the Saviors. The Oceans were once the victims of the Saviors by brutally murdering all men over the age of 10 because the community refused to get into a deal with them. The surviving women and children were able to flee and hide and have since followed a rigorous strategy not to let anyone who finds out about their existence escape. Since Tara doesn't want to stay with the Oceans, the leader Natania plans to have her killed. However, Tara escapes with the help of Natania's granddaughter after she vows not to tell anyone about the Oceans. Tara returns to Alexandria and learns of what has happened. After Rick fails to find enough weapons to wage war against Negan, Tara is forced to break her vow. They manage to take the Oceans without loss and get all weapons from them. However, Natania rejects any further involvement of her group.

Carl manages to break into Negan's base and kill two of the Saviors by hiding in one of the trucks that the Saviors used to collect their tribute from Hilltop. He is then guided through the complex by Negan and introduced to the structures and lifestyle of the Saviors. However, Negan humiliates the youth by forcing him to remove his bandage and sing for him as an apology. Negan brings Carl back to Alexandria and lets him show him the benefits of the community. Deanna's son Spencer, who has grown tired of Rick's leadership, tries to put up with Negan with the aim of getting rid of Rick. Negan loses respect for Spencer when he notices this and slits open his stomach in front of everyone, whereupon he dies. Negan also has Olivia shot after Rosita, embittered because of Abraham's death and Rick's apparent submission, attempts to shoot Negan. As a punishment, he takes Eugene to his base because he has the knowledge of making ammunition. In the following, Eugene quickly learns the benefits of life under Negan's wing and develops more and more sympathy for the community. When two of Negan's wives, who are apparently planning to kill Negan under false claims, ask for his help, he refuses to cooperate shortly before the fulfillment. He keeps the two deadly pills that he made from medicines and household items.

After Sherry has freed Daryl from his cell, Jesus, who also invaded Negan's base, helps him escape. Both return to Hilltop, where Daryl hides from the Saviors for some time and Sasha asks Jesus for information on Negan's location, as previously directed. She initially plans to attempt a single-handed attack on Negan, but receives unexpected support from Rosita, who gives her a sniper rifle with suitable ammunition. After Sasha cannot get a clear field of fire on Negan from a distance during the day, the two plan to raid the base at night. When they want to free Eugene, he refuses their help. Sasha locks Rosita out at the fence around Negan's base and asks her to return to her friends. A little later it turns out that Sasha's mission was unsuccessful and she was captured. She is locked up in a dark room and Negan offers her to join him, which she ultimately refuses. Since Negan has found out about Rick's plan to rebel against him, he wants to move to Alexandria with his men to teach him another lesson, using Sasha as leverage. Eugene gave her one of the deadly pills beforehand, which she swallowed (transported in a locked coffin) on the way to Alexandria and died as a result.

Through Jesus, Rick learns of the existence of the kingdom, where he and his friends ask for an audience with Ezekiel and meet Morgan again. After Ezekiel has listened to Rick's descriptions and plans, he declines to participate. Nevertheless, he offers Daryl to hide permanently in the kingdom and Rick insists. Daryl finds Carol in the episode. During his visit, Carol asks him if everything is okay at home. Daryl says yes so as not to worry her. Carol learns the truth from Morgan a little later and convinces Ezekiel to join Rick's fight against the Saviors, which Ezekiel (as well as Morgan) is now ready to do after Benjamin's murder because of only one missing melon.

Reluctantly, Rosita complies with Sasha's request and, with surprising help from Dwight, flees Negan's base. He accompanies them back to Alexandria, where he is initially held in the cell made by Morgan until he can talk to Rick. Dwight announces that he wants to help Rick get rid of Negan. He tells him about Negan's plan to move up the next day and promises to at least delay his arrival. He also wants to help with the liberation of Sasha. Rick then lets Dwight go unharmed. The next day the junkyard gang arrives in Alexandria and takes up a fully armed position, while shortly afterwards Negan arrives with several vehicles at Alexandria wall. When a booby trap set by Rosita, Aaron and Daryl does not detonate, Jadis and her people identify themselves as Negan's allies and point their weapons at Rick's group. Sasha, who died during Negan's journey, attacks Negan as a walker and gives the group the necessary moment of distraction, in which Carl opens fire against their opponents. Nevertheless, Jadis and Negan manage to regain control of the people of Alexandria. Just as Negan strikes Carl's head with his baseball bat, fighters from the kingdom under Ezekiel's leadership and from the Hilltop under Maggie's leadership arrive in Alexandria and open fire. Negan and the junkyard gang can be forced to retreat together.

Sasha, straying in the forest as a walker, is found by Maggie and Jesus, released from her existence and buried within Alexandria.

In the final scenes of the season finale, leaders Rick, Maggie, Ezekiel - and Negan - prepare their people for an impending war.

The plot begins at the end of the last season, in which Negan has the group around Rick, Carl, Glenn, Maggie, Daryl, Rosita, Abraham, Eugene, Sasha, Michonne and Aaron captured in the forest. He drags Rick into a motor home and drives away with it. Negan tries to subjugate him and forces him to fetch an ax that he recently thrown from the mobile home into a pack of the undead. Rick fights his way through the walkers and climbs onto the motor home. There it becomes clear in brief reviews that Negan first kills Abraham with his baseball bat "Lucille". When Negan tries to force Rosita to look at the dead Abraham, Daryl jumps up and slaps him in the face. He then kills Glenn in the same way. Rick also sees (also in short sequences) the danger that other of his companions will fall victim to Negan's brutality. When Rick and Negan come back from the "excursion", Negan realizes that Rick has still not bowed. He now has a gun pointed at everyone from the Alexandria group who continue to kneel in a semicircle and orders Rick to chop off his son Carl's hand, otherwise he would kill the entire group. At first hesitating and pleading with Negan, Rick overcomes himself and takes a swing when he is interrupted by Negan at the last second. He explains to the group that he is now regularly demanding tribute from them. Then he has Daryl thrown into a van and threatens Rick to kill his friend if his claim is denied. When Negan and his people have left, the pregnant Maggie collapses and wants to take revenge - if necessary alone. The group refuses because they are outnumbered and Negan has also taken a hostage. Maggie can be persuaded to go to Hilltop with the others. The episode ends with the visualization of a cynical utterance by Negan: In a dream sequence, you see the entire group sitting happily at a dining table with those who have just been killed.

While Morgan is teaching a young man his martial arts at Ezekiel's express request, Carol procures clothes, food and a knife to leave the community. However, she is surprised by Ezekiel, who identifies himself as a former zookeeper. He used to play the role of the king in the theater and now plays it because the residents made him so. Carol reacts dismissively; However, she is persuaded to stay in a house nearby, in which Ezekiel visits her with Shiva at the end of the episode. In the meantime he lets Morgan in on the agreement between the Saviors and the "Kingdom", which is unknown to most of the residents. Ezekiel fears that they will call for a war against the Saviors in which they would be defeated. So Ezekiel agrees to pay a tribute. He feeds the Saviors weekly. To do this, pigs are fattened with biters so that they have as much rotten meat as possible in their stomachs. When there is still a fist fight between Richard, a soldier of the "Kingdom" and a Savior while the food is being handed over, Ezekiel stops this. He fears the revenge of the unpredictable Saviors.

Gabriel, who is on guard in Alexandria, hastily loads supplies and weapons into a car and drives away. A hooded figure appears in the back seat.

Gregory is unwilling to support a fight against the Saviors and compliments Rick's group outside. But some Hilltop residents have agreed to do so. Jesus shows the captured radio to the Saviors to listen to their actions and drives with Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Sasha, Tara, Carl and Rosita to the border of the kingdom of Ezekiel, where they ask the guard, Richard and Alvaro, for an audience with the king . The group runs into Morgan, who tells them that Carol was here, received medical attention, and left. In the audience, the residents of Alexandria ask for assistance in the planned uprising, which Richard also pleads for, while Morgan, who is asked for his opinion by Ezekiel, expresses that a fight would cause many victims. At night, Ezekiel speaks to his older, teenage son Benjamin, who suggests participation. The next day, Ezekiel says that he must keep the, albeit uncertain, peace with the Saviors and only offers Daryl asylum. Rick convinces Daryl that this is the best solution for him. On the way back to Alexandria, Rick's group comes across a roadblock made up of cars and a steel cable prepared with dynamite and bazookas, which the Saviors use to secure their nearby base against a large herd of walkers. After Rosita clears the trap, the group retrieves the explosives and weapons, just in time for the herd of walkers to arrive. With only two explosive charges, the Alexandrians detonate the booby trap to cover it up. Jesus and Sasha walk back to Hilltop.

As soon as Rick and his men reach Alexandria, Simon shows up, as overheard on the radio, with several Saviors and aggressively searches everything for Daryl. After Simon's departure, people talk about Gabriel's disappearance. Rick finds "Boot" written in the storage room's notebook, although Gabriel was not aware of the houseboat. Rick follows the footsteps of the secret observer from the lake to a factory site. There he, Aaron, Michonne, Tara and Rosita are captured by an unknown community consisting of almost a hundred, mostly younger men and women, which makes Rick grin broadly.

When a tribute is handed over in the kingdom, Richard and a Savior argue, who insists on taking the pistol from Richard. Ezekiel agrees to keep the peace. Richard leads Daryl to an ambush on a street the Saviors pass regularly and tells him about his plan to ambush and kill a squad of Saviors with Daryl. A trace he laid then leads to a woman who lives in a house in the forest and who is friends with Ezekiel. After the Saviors killed her, Ezekiel would finally fight. When Daryl's suspicion is confirmed that this woman is Carol, he refuses and forcibly prevents Richard from opening fire on two passing Saviors wagons.

The five captured residents of Alexandria are taken to a junkyard that has been converted into a fortress, where they meet the captured Gabriel again. Rick wants to win the new community for the fight against the Saviors, but is pushed down a scrap heap by their leader Jadis, at the foot of which he has to fight a walker draped with a metal helmet and many metal spikes, surrounded by mountains of rubbish. Rick injures his hand and leg, then lets a wall of rubbish fall on the attacker and can cut off his head with a blade. After proving himself, Jadis wishes to have many weapons delivered, then she would fight the Saviors with him. To do this, she demands a third of the booty after negotiations with Rick, who gets half of the supplies back from the boat. She also says that she waited a long time by the boat until someone fetched the supplies for her. Gabriel tells Rick that he was attacked by Jadis in the supply warehouse.

Carol gets a visit from Daryl and hugs him tearfully. She tells him that she couldn't kill anymore; only if something had been done to one of the Alexandrians, she could have done it. She asks if the Saviors came to Alexandria and if everyone at home is safe. Daryl responds that there was a deal with the Saviors and lies by saying that everyone else is fine. Later, Daryl Morgan says that he has found Carol and understands that he has kept her whereabouts secret at her request. Morgan should make it possible for the kingdom to join the fight. The next day Daryl leaves for Hilltop.

Dwight discovers that Daryl has escaped. Negan discovers that Sherry has also disappeared and throws Dwight into the cell for one night before having him look for Sherry. Dwight and Sherry have set up their old home as a meeting place should they get separated. There Dwight finds a letter from her. She writes that she wishes she could wait for him, but doesn't know whether he would go with her, bring her back, or kill her. Because of her, he lives in a world that he never wanted and, through her fault, has become everything he never wanted to be. She only did everything because she didn't want him to die. She let Daryl go because he reminded him of old Dwight. She doesn't think she can get through outside, but being there (in the Sanctuary ) is worse than death. She hopes Dwight can see this and leave. She loved the man he was and she was sorry for what she made of him. Dwight leaves groceries at the meeting point, disturbed. In the sanctuary , he claims to have killed Sherry.

Eugene has a crying fit at what might happen in the Sanctuary . However, the Savior woman Laura shows him in his comfortable and privileged living conditions. His fear of Negan disappears, because he treats him courteously, appoints him as chief engineer and lets three of his wives spend an evening as a company. Two of them then ask him for a poison pill for the third, the unfortunate Amber. As part of Negan's leadership team, he collects medicines from the Saviors Market Hall that he uses to make deadly pills. But because he sees through that the women want to kill Negan with it, he does not give them the poison.

Sasha lies in a cell on the floor with her hands tied behind her back. A savior wants to bring her water for sex. Sasha is not interested. The incoming Negan makes his subordinate aware that his behavior is against the rules and kills him with a stab in the throat. Negan offers Sasha to work for him. Eugene brings her some things into the cell and tells about his arrangement with Negan, which repels Sasha. Later, Eugene speaks through the cell door with Sasha, who asks for a weapon so that Negan "cannot use it against the others." Eugene pushes her one of his poison tablets (in episode 11) under the door for alleged suicidal intent. Sasha looks desperate, apparently she had hoped for something else in order to be able to kill Negan after all. Then the expression on her face relaxes.

Rick puts the gun to Dwight's head and wants to know why he's trying to help them. Dwight replies that he wants an end to Negan's death, which he can't do alone. Daryl lunges at him with a knife, but eventually refuses Tara's request to kill him because of the death of Denise (season 6, episode 14). Dwight tells the Alexandrians that Negan will arrive tomorrow with three trucks and 20 Saviors and that he can stop them a bit by blocking the road with trees. As soon as the squad was eliminated, he would return to the sanctuary and open the gate to Rick and his people, who would be driving the trucks there. After the base was shut down, they could go to the individual bases of the Saviors with the liberated workers. Dwight drives back.

In Hilltop, where Gregory has disappeared, Jesus and Enid talk to Maggie, who makes a decision about whether to participate in the action against Negan. In the kingdom, Carol practices with the knight troops, and Morgan, too, can be integrated into the combat regiment after Ezekiel's approval.

The people from the junkyard in Alexandria arrive with trucks and bicycles. Rosita, Daryl and Aaron prepare an explosive charge in a truck in front of the walls.

Negan opens Sasha's cell door and greets her with food for the first day of the rest of her life. She should help him with his approach against Rick, whose battle plans were brought to him. Sasha negotiates with him that only one Alexandrian instead of three will die when Lucille is punished. Negan wants to stage his hostage getting out of a coffin in Alexandria, Sasha wants to go into it right at the start of the journey, “to rest”. She gets water and a Walkman from Eugene and experiences reminiscences with Abraham and Maggie while driving before she swallows the fatal pill that she got from Eugene (episode 15). After the tree lock has been removed, Eugene asks to be allowed to speak to the residents in front of the gate of Alexandria and appeals to them to give up. Then Rick gives the signal to ignite the dynamite - without result (Jadis' subordinate had previously put out a cigar at the point where the ignition cable ran). Everyone in the junkyard is suddenly pointing their guns at the people of Alexandria - Jadis has secretly made a better deal with the Saviors. Negan starts his staging, erects the coffin and demands all weapons, all lemonades, a sacrifice for Lucille, which Rick is to determine, Daryl and the pool table from the residents of Alexandria in exchange for Sasha. With Jadis' gun pointed at him, Rick insists on seeing Sasha. Negan opens the coffin and Sasha, who has now mutated into a walker, pounces on him. A Savior can tear her away from Negan and becomes her victim himself. In the confusion, the Alexandrians start a short exchange of fire, with victims mainly among the garbage collectors. Jadis shoots Rick and leads him to an indoor green area next to Carl, who is kneeling in front of Negan. Negan announces to him that Carl and then Rick's hands will be victims of Lucille, but is irritated when Ezekiel's tiger reaches back and attacks Savior who is standing next to him. At the last moment the fighters from Hilltop and the Kingdom arrived and the junkyard people and Negan were put to flight.

In the sanctuary, Eugene, when Negan's question about the reason for Sasha's death, says that the tarpaulin covering the coffin has stolen her air. Negan declares war. In Alexandria, Sasha is redeemed and buried.
